Strolling down Grant Ave, we came across a short line of people outside a small bakery. Being the curious type and a pushover for any baked goods that might be different, we had to ask. "You must try these egg tarts" said the last person in line. "I've been all over the country including New York, and no one ........ More

Traditional Moon Cakes were about $8.30 when Eastern was charging $5.90 per moon cake. They were good but not sure if it was worth the extra cost. Again they were out of their specialty "egg custard". So I can't comment on their egg custards.

This bakery has the best egg tarts I've ever tasted. I can't explain to you how amazing they are. But before you come, 1. Make sure to check the Facebook page "Is Golden Gate Bakery Open?". The owners go on vacation a lot. Also, I've been a couple times when they won't have egg tarts until 2 or 3 pm... More

we were walking through china town when two locals told us about Golden Gate Bakery for the best egg tarts. they also said the hours are a little random so when we got to the bakery and found it closed we werent that disappointed. Another nite after dinner in china town we saw a line outside golden gate bakery and... More

I used to come here as a little kid, my mom would get me a variety of things. Coconut buns, pineapple buns, egg tarts. I love the smell of fresh bread when they come up from the bakery downstairs with fresh trays of goodness. Everything was cheap and inexpensive back then. Now that this place has gone viral, you can't... More

Why would anyone wait so long standing on the street just for baked goods? It's that these egg custards are so darned good. Especially when hot! But, if they also have Pineapple Pies, get these too! Enjoy the scenery (such as it is), make friends with others in line, don't let people cut in line when you "make the turn"... More

We waited in line for about 10 minutes without anyone moving before someone said the line went another direction and several of us lost our spot. The gentleman near the middle of the other line said he had been there for 40 minutes. It must be worth the wait, but not that day for me. If you make it to... More

We were disappointed to see that this bakery has inconsistent hours of operation, as it was advertised on their website to open daily at 0700hrs. We finally saw employees entering the bakery and they told us to return at noon. We found a huge lineup outside the bakery at 4pm and clearly it is a very popular place. The wait... More

Perhaps I am not being fair to rate this location so poorly. Actually I remember having egg tarts here several years ago and they were wonderful. Just the right amount of custard, flaky crust and very generously sized. However, this place is strictly for people who live in the neighborhood and have plenty of time to waste. I had heard... If you like egg tarts then this is the place for you. If not, then I don’t think this is worth an hour wait. They have a bunch of things but the egg tarts are the best and you should definitely try those. If you plan to go there keep in mind a few things : - make sure it’s... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighbourhood decorated with colourful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighbourhood.
