We were looking for Californian cuisine, which in itself does not have a precise identity, but is the result of a melting pot of the various culinary cultures brought here by the various communities (Hispanic, Asian, European, etc.).
In my opinion, this restaurant, with decent quality and service standards, makes you understand and experience the essence of this culinary melting pot.
Each dish always has cosmopolitan influences (spices, vegetables used, sauces, cooking methods) and in each dish you recognize flavors and tastes that remind you of flavors experienced in Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, the Middle East.
Obviously it is apparently easy to mix various flavors, but the strong point of this restaurant are three:
1) Harmony: the flavors you find in the dish are very balanced and balanced, none dominates the other, and the basic ingredient (fish, meat, etc.) is not canceled out by the condiments. In summary, the various spices, sauces, etc. are flavor enhancers and do not themselves become the protagonists of the dish. I find it pleasant to hear distant influences from various territories but without them coming into conflict with each other or affecting the taste of the dish.
2) Taste and flavour. Sometimes fusion cuisines represent a whim and fail to satisfy the "Italian" approach of eating for the sake of eating and hedonistically savoring your dish. Instead, in this place I found a lot of taste and flavor: when you put the fork in your mouth, you enjoyed the flavor and were pushed to try again and finish the dish. In short, you can eat with gusto.
3) identity. Each dish I tried had its own identity, you notice that the chef wants to communicate a main taste accompanied by many complementary flavours. In addition to the pleasant sensations of the moment, what you took remains in your memory because the dish has its main imprint.
All the courses I tried largely satisfied me and it's a shame that my holiday in SF is over, but I would gladly go back to try the other courses.
A complete dinner with wine, starter, main course and dessert costs around 150 Euros per person but it's worth it.
With some small adjustments to: style, plating, wine list, accommodation, in my opinion it can aspire to a Michelin star, but in terms of food we are very good.
A tip: make a local wines section (Sonoma, Russian River, etc) on the menu!
I was struck by the look and determined approach (but with a smile) of the very young head chef who led his team in the interesting open kitchen. An orchestra conductor with his teachers.

Not your typical luau Kalua pork, poi, lomi salmon or lau lau. Unique dishes, at least to us. Try as much as your budget allows. Excellent chips and dip with trout roe, trout sashimi, gulf shrimp with crunchy forbidden rice, shaved pig head - not what you might think, fried rice with homemade spam to start. Long cod plus pork chop and top off with baked Hawaii and panna cotta. Bring large family. Interesting cocktails too. Great service.

My wife and I visited Liholiho after a LONG workday. I was pleased to find an available reservation without booking a week or more in advance. We arrived early and our table was ready. The staff was pleasant, attentive, but not intrusive. We shared one appetizer, one entre, and one dessert. Everything was superb. Do NOT MISS the Backed Hawaii. It was even better than the Swordfish, which I highly recommend. The bill was a tad more than we would have liked ($90+), but we were very pleased with the overall experience. Give 'em a try. Also, if you plan to stroll there look at the topography. The restaurant is definitely UPHILL from mission street, Union square, Yerba Buena, and the Embarcadero. Walking through many places in SF is kind of dicey these days. So a quick uber/lyft/ or taxi is probably best. We got a ride for ~$10 each way.

The game hen was not properly cooked, I should have sent it back, parts of it were still raw. Yeck! No wonder my stomach was in such a state last night.
Otherwise, the swordfish main was great. But will all the mains, they are made for two! I would go for the appies, then share one main if you have a partner. But avoid the game hen. And yes, my bad for not saying anything. And no, there is no view of the water from this very "modern" eatery.

We visited last night. Liholiho has a fabulous vibe & everyone was just lovely. The food is out of this world. Just vibrant & interesting & novel & utterly delicious.
We had two fish dishes to share - the cod & the swordfish & both were so fresh & the accompanying elements made each dish unique. We didn’t order appetisers as we wanted to leave room for dessert but we shared the chips & kimchi dip which again were just delicious and unique. Desserts were sublime & beautifully presented.
Would highly recommend booking a table here for whenever you can - they were rightly busy all night.
Special shout out to Alejandro who looked after us so wonderfully and made the whole experience even better.
We will definitely be back next time we visit S.F.

The food was insane. Amazing staff, great vibe and the best asparagus I’ve ever eaten. Thoroughly recommend. Worth the walk up the San Fran hills.

Simply excellent food. Eat here when you can, and often. The sooner the better. We first ate here about 18 months ago and were overjoyed.

This is a truly outstanding restaurant featuring Hawaiian food. The cocktails were creative and strong, the food was excellent, and service was first rate too. I stuck to the vegetarian options and left very happy.

Asian fused with Hawaiian at this semi-hot and chic now-in-the-Mission eatery. We had Poke (very good), sashimi (good), pork rolls (sandwiches, also good), and the short ribs (tasty but super fatty). The servers were great, fast, and seemed to care*. Food was fine, but I don't think we'd necessarily hurry back to get those flavors again.
*We paid via credit card in the app you download when you get to your table (touchless ordering, because of COVID). I'm cool with that. The server mentioned once credit card was in, be sure to not over order because it's like getting takeout through a food app -- they don't provide a bill you sign. Then I asked how we tip her and she said it will be included. OK, I thought. I assumed it was all up in the prices (which weren't extravagant at all. So I thought this was great.) But they add 25% on to the bill. 20% guaranteed tip and then 5% SF mandated tax. So, be aware. I usually tip 20% anyway but not sure I loved the 25% total I didn't expect.)

I was looking forward to dining at Liho-Liho for a long time due to its popularity. We finally booked a table and while the food was really good, it wasn’t amazing in my opinion. Also service wasn’t great. I feel like the waiters were not very friendly and didn’t give us much attention. For some reason, also, I got VERY sick when I got home. So it just made my whole experience worse.

From meeting our server, Caitlin, last evening, this was a very good experience. She guided us through an interesting cocktail list, and gave detailed descriptions of menu items in which we were interested. In addition, she was VERY helpful in suggesting numbers of small plates, entrées/main courses for us.
However, at some point, I asked her if there was any other music that was available not techno, to which she replied that it was a soundtrack. She DID manage to get the volume diminished, and--for a time, perhaps 15 minutes?--something not quite as annoying in its repetitiveness.
Just FYI as it might affect your dining experience.

After a few months of trying to figure out how to get a reasonable reservation time on a weekend I got up at midnight when they open the reservations a month ahead of time and booked a table for four. I have been looking forward to eating here for some time. We were seated immediately and the restaurant is fun and high energy, not pretentious. The menu has some interesting twists on standard fare. One of us ordered the popcorn appetizer, I am not sure why, and it was just popcorn with salt and pepper to me. The poke appetizer was really good, the fried rice with homemade spam was very good, the short ribs were good but I have had better, we all loved the fried chicken. We shared a rice pudding dessert and I enjoyed that. The sommelier was helpful and recommended a wonderful wine in our price range.

Fun place.
Friendly service.
Creative cocktails - made with a heavy hand.
Delicious food.
But soooooo RICH
Really needed an acid or sweet balance.
Will return - but will scan the menu for lighter items.

We had dinner here on a Friday night. Parking was interesting so best to take Uber/Lyft. Once inside, the restaurant was packed - in a good way. People were enjoying themselves and the environment was great. We ate in the bar and service was excellent. We had tuna and corn salad, both were delicious. The cocktail selection is creative.
This is definitely worth a visit.
