Great seating indoors and out for this chic eatery. People watching here is big especially during their happy hour. Try $3 bellinis. Pappardelle with duck breast out of this world. Moist and tender duck along with thick noodles in a brandy sauce makes this a go to item. Salads are average. Creative desserts like homemade cheesecake tort and Panna cotta... More

Perfect weather, wonderful food, great service. Davide was our server and he was very knowledgeable. It seems the menu will change slightly on a daily basis, check before you go. I had the Prix Fixe and that included smaller portions and 2 glasses of house wine for $50.

Called about 3 weeks ago to reserve a late luncheon for 11 people. The person who took the reservation said we're all set. When we arrived, they were not expecting us. We waited while they put together several tables. Good thing there were not a lot of people eating then. They were attentive and nice. The food was good. The... More

We just stumbled upon this place as we needed a last minute reservation on a Saturday night! It had good reviews so we went. We were all surprised how good everything was from the lentil soup, burrata (amazing!), risotto, pasta, ravioli and of course dessert! The staff was friendly and we did not feel rushed. The only issue we had... More

I was on my way to another restaurant but it wasn't my cup of tea so I wandered down Columbus and saw this place. Asked a couple eating outside if it was good and they said yes. I had the Cesar salad and the wild boar ragut. Awesome

This place was not our first choice but it was New Years so we didn't have too many options. My daughter wasn't that hungry so she only ordered a salad. At first the server told us we all had to order entrées (it was a New Years thing), he checked with management and we were told it was ok not... More

Very Friendly staff. Good wine list. Kids had steak. No pizza which was a nice change. We sat outside at first under the heaters but moved inside once the placed had cleared. We had coffee and waited until close to midnight and then walked to telegraph hill to watch the new year fireworks.

An Italian restaurant can be judged on it pasta - and here it was perfectly al dente - the sauce was excellent and the grilled chicken very tasty. The bruschetta was also excellent - perfectly crispy bread. Service was friendly and helpful. Can't wait to come back.

I found Panta Rei on OpenTable.com and saw that they had great reviews, so decided to try them out. I'm glad I did. I had the Pappardelle Verdi All'antra. It is duck breast in a brandy cream sauce served over pappardelle pasta. The duck breast was exquisite! I also had the calamari and zucchini appetizer, which was good, and a... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
