It is a rare event to eat outside at night in SF in November with no jacket and no heater. The quiet table with a backdrop of the Bay Bridge with its sparkling lights is wonderful. Great options to choose from ranging from sushi to fusion.

I will always stop there while I am visiting SF (many times per year). I am still extremely impressed by their American Wagyu... Go for it !!

What a superb experience! Sophisticated, elite, different and high quality. Don't go here unless you want to be impressed or to impress (your date, for example)! It is a cut above the best. We started with two glasses of Caneros bubbles by Taitinger. For starters we had the Alcatraz Sushi Roll and the Spiced Ahi Tuna. All was superb. We... More

A very good meal even if the service was a bit rushed. I had the sushi plate pictured. All very fresh fish and tasty. My spouse had the black cod which she also enjoyed. The only draw back was the wait person was always pushing the next course!

I was there on a Sunday night and it was perfect for conversation with good food and drink. Server was a little too attentive but we were last table to leave.

We had a very good meal at Chaya with very good service. It is expensive but so is everwhere in San Fran. Two glasses of wine and two main courses will be easily $120. If you have an appetiser and a dessert then expect to be closer to $200. Nicely placed close to the Bay Bridge and nice for a... More

We were a group of four on a busy Friday night. Vibrant atmosphere and good food. The Tuna tartar was the best I have had in a long time, but it was the service that made this restaurant shine. It really was outstanding. Very professional. Great job everyone.

Tried sushi for the first time and was really impressed! Everything we had was delicious, if expensive. Waiter was friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.

It is a good choice to have lunch here. For dinner, it is more expensive without standard good service. The waiter kept us waiting for the bill, after we told him again, he threw the bill at our table in front of our guests. I never encountered such a rude behavior in any high-class restaurant!

Description
The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations. Corporate Executive Chef, Shigefume Tachibe is best known for pioneering modern Japanese cuisine and his contributions to the Asian-Fusion movement. His chef coat and knife are in permanent display in the Smithsonian. The most important tenet of Chaya's philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

Staying in SoMa

Neighbourhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighbourhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighbourhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
