Looooong wait. But worth it. Dungeness crab was in season, and they (and we) took advantage of it. You should, too!

We were informed that there is always a long line to get into this iconic SF restaurant. Unfortunately, the day we went to experience first hand one of their delicious breakfasts it was pouring rain, but that did not deter our party. Our group made the most of it by getting to know the other people sharing the line with... More

After reading the reviews and receiving a few recommendations my boyfriend and I thought it was worth a visit. We had a nice breakfast, but unfortunately I don't think it's worth queuing for. There are plenty of other places which offer similar breakfasts so we were left a little puzzled why everyone chooses to wait for this one - we... More

Attention Australians, if you are looking for a business opportunity in SF then a breakfast café in Little Italy is it. Mama's was almost the only place open in the mornings for breakfast, apart from bakeries. We wanted to give this place a go because there were always people lining up. Be aware though that there are two lines; one... More

The place is old school, that's why I think the service is so slow (in addition to the lack of room and not being capable to meet the demand). The food is good but I had very high expectations because of the reviews and I left wondering whether the 2 hour wait was actually worth it. Honestly, I didn't think... More

Is Mama's good yes, is it 2 hour wait good. Not if your a tourist there are amazing spots to eat all over the city and North Beach. When it comes down to it it's breakfast.

Well we waited in a long line which I didn't mind. But it was when I stepped in and was waiting to order that alarmed me in every which way. I saw the cooks and the food safety handling "do not's" everywhere. From the food sitting out in the open with flies and gnats on it, to the cooks not... More

Heard this brunch place from a friend, we got to wait for nearly 1.5 hrs to get a table. We're happy that our wait paid off because their food was delicious. I got to try french toast with a triangle shape bread layered with ham and cheese (i think).would definitely go back to this cafe if in San Francisco

We got there early before they opened and the line filled up behind us. Breakfast was good and coffee was fine. Need to come back and try their pastries, they looked amazing!

Description
Established in 1951.
The family of Mama and Papa Sanchez, serves up traditional and innovative breakfast dishes in "Little Italy", the famous North Beach District in San Francisco. Across the street from the beautiful Washington Square Park, Mama's legions of fans line up early and throughout the day. We use the freshest of local products, imported Italian meats to fill our fluffy omelettes, homemade jam, fresh baked breads, pastries and other delectable dishes. We invite you to try our little restaurant and become part of the Mama's Family.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
