Very classic grill specializing in seafood. Bottom line OK on all fronts, but lacking both character and creativity. Given the SF pricing, there are numerous restaurants that deliver more in the immediate Hayes Valley vicinity.

My friend and I enjoyed our recent dining experience here, my first time. It is very close to Davies Hall, a big plus. The ambiance of the restaurant is pleasant, with warm lighting. Both the host and waiter were gracious and accommodating. My friend was late in arriving and I enjoyed a cocktail while waiting for her. We shared cracked... More

I have eaten at Hayes Street Grill at least 4-5 times over the years of visiting SF from NY. Once again, this was a wonderful experience! My wife and I went with eight other friends and each of us came away very satisfied. The persimmon-smoked trout appetizer was mouth-watering delicious as was my petrale sole (a local SF favorite). Dessert... More

Have been coming to the Grill for years. Absolutely love their sand dabs. Prepared perfectly. Wait staff is top notch. Quiet and able to engage in intimate conversation as opposed to so many SF restaurants which are so loud one must yell across the table.

We were looking for a place near the San Francisco Opera where we could have an early dinner. Hayes Street Grill has a nice "old San Francisco" feel to it. We had a sensational meal of scallops and one of the best chocolate desserts ever called "bete noir." Unbelievably chocolate-y. Service was superb, and they had a great wine list.

The Hayes Street Grill is a cozy place to dine. The food is great as well. I had Paella, which was not quite traditional (more like chipping with rice), but delicious. My wife's halibut was done just right. Lastly, our waiter was exceptional.

Hayes Street Grill has become a bit old fashioned and thus is no longer the super-popular place it once was. Still very reliable for simple grilled fish dinners. Professional service.

Always consistent in the seafood deppartment, but that's not all. The food is always fresh and seasonal delicacies are the lead items.

Staying in Hayes Valley

Neighbourhood Profile
Hayes Valley
Chock full of designer boutiques, art galleries, funky shoe stores, and great restaurants, it’s hard to imagine Hayes Valley once languished in the shadow of a major freeway. Its removal allowed for the creation of an attractive boulevard on Octavia Street with a community park at its center and dozens of trendy businesses to satisfy visitors looking for a stylish respite.
