The menu has been updated with simple, hearty dishes suitable for the boisterous " common touch" tavern. Some new things have been added that promise to add to merriment, like punch bowls (serving a single table of abt four) in alcoholic and no Need- alcoholic versions. Execution of the recipes is rarely consistent, however and the quality (and temperatures) of... More

Food was average, wish they had a better variety, wish the music player played more than just one song.

We ate here our last day in Colonial Williamsburg and it was outstanding. We were one of the last groups in before closing so the service was both fast and friendly. Excellent suggestions. We were offered the opportunity to sit with another couple and it made for a very nice lunch and conversation. I had the hot smoked turkey plate... More

There are four historic taverns in the rhistoric area of Williamsburg and we have eaten several meals at each one over our several visits. Our hands-down favorite is Chownings (pronounced Chune-ings for some reason.) The location is terrific, toward the middle of the restored area main street and their menu has more variety of moderate priced dishes sthan do the... More

We wanted the tavern experience without the huge price tag. The food was pretty good without breaking the bank. We arrived early for dinner at 5:30 p.m. and were seated within 5 minutes. If you prefer eating at peak hours in the candlelight, make sure you visit the hostess on the porch and get your name on the list early.... More

This place is busy! We were waiting in line when it opened and that was a good call. We didn't have a long wait for our food. Our kids tried the soups and liked them. My husband and I enjoyed the Ploughman's platter. The dining rooms are crowded and loud if that is a concern to you. A fiddler in... More

First, just remember this - you have to put your name in with the host so don't expect to walk up and get a table immediately during busy times of the year (ex. spring break, holidays). We were told 1 1/2 hours wait but it was more like 2 hours. This didn't matter to us because we came early to... More

We were told the wait was 40 minutes and it was more like 110 minute wait. If you plan on eating in the town make a reservation.. the man out front told a family they were to big of people and made them wait longer.. what who says that. ?? The family had a daughter in a wheel car and... More

They will take your name and give you an approximate time for your meal. the inside was rustic looking as you might expect in the middle of colonial Williamsburg. Amy, our waitress, was very efficient and friendly.Along with our dinner we listened to a singer and a piper.
