This is not an easy review to write. Nothing was really wrong with this experience. The service was good and attentive to all our needs. We were a party of seven. Maybe the problem is that for this type of restaurant and the higher end...prices I just wanted the food to be a lot better. I started with the onion soup and it was good, however, when you charge $11 for soup it needs to be better than good. I got the fried chicken special of the night. It was very ok. It was not traditional fried chicken, which is ok, but don’t call it fried chicken if it not truly fired. The sauce it came in was good and the mushrooms were a nice touch. Others in our party has different items and while everyone said theirs was ok, no one was raving about what they had. Once again, maybe our expectations were just to high.More

Earlier this August, on a Thursday evening, I went to Mon Ami Gabi w/ my spouse, my daughter and my daughter’s boyfriend. Because my spouse and I live in Florida, on account of the pandemic we had not seen our daughter for almost two years...and were meeting her boyfriend for the first time. The dinner did not begin auspiciously and went down hill after that. For a first course I ordered the gazpacho special, which was served from a tureen tableside. After the server left, I reached for my soup spoon—and there was none. I waited for about a minute to see if I could grab the attention of a waiter or server, but none appeared and my gazpacho was getting warm. I saw the service station behind me, stood up to check the first of two drawers--nothing useful--but in the second there was a single soup spoon with which I returned to our table so that I could eat my soup. Three of us had ordered steaks, and we all requested that the steaks be prepared medium rare. My daughter and her boyfriend each ordered a filet; I ordered a hanger steak. After the steaks were delivered to the table and we all cut into them, it was clear that none of them was medium rare! No one appeared after the delivery of the steaks to the table to ask whether everything was satisfactory. My daughter didn’t eat her steak, waiting in vain for our waiter to return; her boyfriend waited at least ten minutes before beginning to eat his. (I ate mine so as not to further ruin the occasion. Because we were all on our good behavior, none of us did what we might otherwise have done—demanded to see the manager.) My daughter never ate her steak. The waiter appeared after the rest of us had finished eating, my daughter explained that her steak was not medium rare as requested and the waiter took the steak “to the manager.” When he returned he asked her whether she would want a properly prepared steak to take home, to which she assented. Ultimately, the bill presented to me showed a charge for three filets, and a credit for one. Was I charged for the steak my daughter didn’t eat, and the steak she took home was provided gratis? Or did they remove the charge for the steak she didn’t eat but seized on her willingness to take a steak home as an acceptance of an offer to sell her a second steak. Obviously I am being facetious as neither alternative is an acceptable result: the correct result was for the restaurant to remove the charge for the uneaten item; if they want to create good will, they could have given her gratis a steak to take home. Because of this shabby treatment, I have since perused the bill which contains two remarkable features worth commenting on here: First, a 3% surcharge “to offset government mandates on employers” which would “be removed upon [my] request”—I didn’t notice it at the time so I paid it; and second, “gratuity calculations” for “my convenience” showing 18% to be $38.62; 20% to be $42.91; and 22% to be $47.20. The gratuity computations are noteworthy given that the total bill, including tax and surcharge, came to $191.73 on which 18% is $34.51; 20% is $38.35; and 22% is $42.18. In other words, the “gratuity computations” for “my convenience” are at least $4 to $5 overstated (assuming the diner is including the convenience charge and tax in the tip computation.) Mon Ami Gabi was once a very good restaurant. As my family’s recent experience indicates, this is no longer the case.More

Service from our waiter was AWESOME!!! Atmosphere (inside and neighborhood) was also well worth the trip. Food here was just OK for the price and compared with the competition in the area. For a European restaurant, we felt most (not all) of the dishes were...too salty. The beef wellington that was one of the specials was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked -- fillet mignon was perfectly seasoned and wrapped in just wonderfully baked pastry: YUMMY! However, the chicken was not marinaded well enough; it was cooked perfectly -- not too dry -- which is a nod to the kitchen's skills. Both the burger and filet mignon were "OK" for the type of restaurant -- i.e., better than the average chain restaurant as far as quality of meat, but lower quality in taste than the higher end steak restaurants in the area that charge about the same price or less for comparable dishes. The desserts were similarly mixed in quality: crème brulee was great, chocolate mouse was good, mixed berry sorbet was about what I can get in an American grocery store: artificially flavored sorbet in a French restaurant? I guess 20 years living in the Mediterranean spoiled me, but still, I had expected more from a "slightly higher end" French Restaurant in the middle of Reston Town Center. Wine was OK. I "grew up" on Italian wine and think they're comparable to French wine at lower prices. Most of the better California cabs beat the crap out of any European offerings, French or Italian. So paying premium price for an OK wine while dining out was just "OK." Service was awesome! Our waiter was so helpful, we'll come back just for the atmosphere AND the service. Perfect restaurant? No. Best in the area? No. But overall atmosphere, variety, good (even if not great) food, and awesome service made for a recommended experience. Oh---they do automatically put a "COVID" surcharge on bills that go toward "the corporation" for things like wipes, santizers, etc... I disagree strongly with this practice as everybody--my family included--are struggling with the economic impact of COVID and other restaurants are happy to host us without a surcharge, so I asked the charge to be removed, which they did easily and gladly. I would rather just put the money directly toward the servers who are directly in contact with me and my family -- especially when they're as awesome as the one who ran our table.More

This place has a nice atmosphere, good service, and the food is quite good. If you are in the area and looking for a good meal at a reasonable price, this place is worth a try.

Onion soup was tasteless. Caramelized Scallops too sweet and sautéed spinach had no flavor. Apple tart tatin also too sweet. Not worth the cost.

Went for brunch and the service was terrible and the food was just okay. Our server seemed irritated that we wanted an actual paper menu, irritated that we ordered coffee because as she said "you will just have to wait until it's made" (I know,...it's crazy to request coffee at brunch) irritated because we asked about a menu item. The food was just okay too. I've been to this restaurant many times so I do have a means to compare. Today was just bad all the way around. PS- they charge a 4% COVID surcharge on every guest check. So you are paying even more for bad food and service.More

Many years ago, we had a chance to visit Mon Ami Gabi in Las Vegas. Their steak roquefort was one of the most memorable meals that I have ever experienced. It was through TripAdvisor that I found this place and decided to give it a...try in this Reston location. The quality of the steak roquefort and fries were amazing and brought back many memories as I enjoyed each bite. Service was decent, but did notice that one of my drinks was charged at a much higher price than what I actually ordered, plus there is a 4% fee charged now to assist with COVID-19 recovery. Even though I understood them doing the last option, I was not too happy them charging a higher amount for a drink that I did not order. Another staff member was able to fix it immediately, but would recommend that you check your bill before turning in your credit card. The reason is that I saw another review similar to my own, so it is better to play it safe. Other than such inconvenience, the restaurant is a good French Bistro and worth considering.More

Finally! A great meal during the pandemic and that also on Mothers’ Day. In hindsight I’m glad PF Chang’s closed down in Sterling as I had ordered a meal only to have the Mother’s day order cancelled as the restaurant closed (see my review of...the location at Tysons which was a disappointment). Mon Ami was close by and convenient in Reston. There was a Mother’s Day special of Salmon, vegetable, salad and a slice of Sponge Cake. Easy to order online. Just be aware that when ordering on Tock their online system, you can’t change an order. I tried. I had to call the location to verbally add an order. Scheduled for noon, there was a line and about a 20 minute wait. It was a pleasant wait so no issue. I was just praying the food was good as we have been so disappointed in several of our go-to restaurants during this pandemic. The food was placed in great containers. The salmon, crab cake, dessert and side dishes of beans and mashed potatoes. All the food came out really well and very tasty and delicious. It was such a welcome change . The pictures don’t do justice but I definitely will use them again and recommend. Hats off to the chefs for making a special meal on a special Day.More

Excellent date night dinner with hubby. We sat at the bar for a drink first. I had the Gin Fever which was perfection! I loved this drink. Hubs had the House Barrel Aged Manhattan which was also beautifully made. I love how you get a...water with your drinks without asking for one. We moved to our table and had the duck starter and our mains. We had a couple of glasses of wine and the profiteroles for dessert. Our meal was lovely with top notch service. However, when paying for our bill, my husband noticed 2 extra glasses of wine on our bill. I’m not sure how this could have happened. I would have given them 5 stars but for this problem.More

It was a full house when I went, but I didn’t have a problem hearing conversation. I guess it would depend upon the type of crowd that is there that day.
