My husband and I has stayed at the lovely Clifton Inn more than 20 years ago, and wanted a nice place for dinner during a college tour visit to Charlottesville with our teenage son. The Inn was a perfect spot for an outstanding meal in its restful, idyllic location. The food was excellent -- we took another reviewers advice on... More

We were greeted as we entered and since we had let them know we were there for a celebration, staff brought that up immediately. We were given complementary champagne as well because of our celebration. Our server was attentive but not annoyingly so. Food was delicious, we had the scallops, pork chop and steak and since we all tasted each... More

They recently changed their menu to encourage more diners looking for a nice evening out. They are trying to not make it a once a year special occasion place. Four dined for the price of two during a March special. Three of us had the shrimp and grits appitizer. It was singularly the best dish I have had this year.... More

My wife and I enjoyed a fabulous 5 course dinner at the Clifton just a couple of days prior to Valentines (It fit our schedule and, as it turns out, my wife took a tumble on the day prior to Valentines and ended up at the ER - that's why the review is a couple of weeks late). We have... More

WE came by while we visited VA. THIS PLACE WAS PRICELESS!!! An unbelievably wonderful evening. Outstanding food and wait staff. The wine pairings with the courses were outstanding. Will never forget this evening!

Very friendly service and dinner was very good. We were in a "suite" that was located outside the main inn. Unfortunately the room was a little rustic. The beds were comfy but the bathroom needed some TLC and the heat was not well balanced - sleeping area very hot and bathroom/small sitting area very cold. We have stayed in many... More

if you want really pretty food this is the place to choose. If you want really tasty food and a lot of food this is definitely not the place for you. To start off with the salad was basically three leaves. The entrée was maybe One full broccoli floret. The flank steak was less than the RDA 4 ounces for... More

I had talked with the Clifton Inn three times about our reservation confirming a mix of one regular diner plus two vegetarian diners. Each time they assured me the vegetarian diners were not a problem. When we arrived, the waitress said they didn't have a vegetarian option, but they could give us a plate of sides from the other dinners.... More

Our family was the first to sit in the kitchen with the new chef, Aris. After ordering our entrees we were delighted with a plate of pickled vegetables, using star anise and cinnamon, and an amuse bouche of watermelon, feta and mint that brought nuanced flavor to the tongue at different moments! The scallops were perfectly cooked through, the steak... More

Pleasant and gracious, the food is cutesy--said advisedly--so that multiple plates of miniscule portions result in your departure with you not knowing what you ate, and you are hungry! For a lofty dollar as well. This historic place needs to shake itself and start serving substantial, real food.
