I love the food here. Their baked chicken and fried catfish is so good. Their turkey wing and meatloaf is also worth trying. Never had a bad meal here. However, the part you will not like is the long wait for a meal especially on...the weekend. It didnt make ince to wait well over an hour and still not get your order taken. This year, they have really changed. They seem to only make the online orders first so if someone does and order online even while you are there, they still prepare their order first and not take your order. You used to be able to look at the food before you select but not anymore. Everything is in the back and hidden. Its not worth the wait anymore. So I found another Soul food place on homestead that is pretty darn good and I dont have to wait over an hour and a half to get a meal.More

So good! I came here two weekends in a row! This place is really good. On my first trip I ordered baked chicken, dressing, cabbage and greens. Everything was delicious! On the second trip I ordered catfish, greens, dressing, sweet potatoes and peach cobbler. Again,...everything was delicious. This is my new go-to spot when in the area. There’s not much fuss or decoration inside the building, but the food is on point. I’ll be back!More

We wanted a quick bite to eat after visiting the Houston Holocaust Museum. Looking at reviews, we decided on Alfreda's Cafeteria. Every food item the reviews mentioned, we loved, and we were not disappointed. The fried shrimp was excellent having a very nice light batter....The fried catfish was HUGE and tasty! Didn't even need ketchup! Our sides were mac&cheese, soooo good and sweet potatoes with the perfect amount of sweet. We also had peach cobbler and banana pudding which tasted just like good old recipes grandma used to make. The staff was very nice, made sure we had everything we needed, and checked to be sure we were enjoying our food. Much enjoyed! Thank you (:More

I have eaten at ten different soul food spots in Houston but Alfreda's stands tall above all of the rest. This is my opinion. It not about just the food. I can cook that myself. It's about the service and heart of the people who...serve at Alfreda's. Over the las three years (2015-2018) I have eaten at this restaurant over 100 times and I have rarely if ever been disappointed. I highly recommend Alfreda's breakfast. It is exceptional! I look forward to going back soon.More

First time eating at this restaurant and the wait staff was patient and walked us thru the order process. The smothered pork chops was excellent! The meat so tender it kept falling off my fork. The mac & cheese was great and the peach cobbler was...perfect. Left there with a full belly. This place did not disappoint.More

Smothered pork chops were fried too hard then gravy added to them. Not tender or melt in your mouth good, very dry! Cabbage was over cooked and bland, more of the white core than the greens. I passed on the mac and cheese, looked like...it was out of the box. Green beans just ok, Other meats did look a lot better, oxtails, turkey wings, baked chicken and hamburger steak, I was told the smothered steak was also tough. Prices are reasonable. I will stick with the breakfast, it is always on point if you get there early.More

Just like going to mom's house for after church dinner. No one has to cook over a hot stove, just pick it up and tske it home.

Some of the food is excellent, some not so good. Not a good place to watch your weight. Served cafeteria style. Limited seating. Great greens. Very heavy meal on the stomach but some very delicious. Loved the cornbread.

I enjoy eating at soul food restaurants but don't get the opportunity to do so as often as I would like. One of the reasons is that there aren't a lot of them around in the Houston area as opposed to other food type restaurants...(Mexican, Italian, Seafood, BBQ, etc.) and the ones that I have been to I have t liked that much for various reasons. Well I think I have found my fave soul food restaurant in town and it is here. While I have only had one visit it was a very good one. Yesterday while in the Museum District I took the short drive over to Alameda to eat there. Going through the cafeteria line I decided to try the smothered steak with rice and gravy along with Blake eye peas and green beans along with some cornbread. Man was it good....the meat was flavorful and juicy. I really liked the steak gravy on the rice. The beans and peas were very good too. Finally the big piece of cornbread was moist and good. My bill with tax was about $11 and it was well worth it. I will return when I am in the area.More

Excellent lunch buffet under $10 made with a little soul and a lotta love. We enjoyed braised oxtails, roast chicken, roast turkey legs, and spaghetti with meatballs, with three sides of okra, kidney beans, Mac n cheese, green beans, cabbage, rice, mash taters, dressing. Save...room for Alfreda's home made desserts. Yowza!More
