Came across this place after watching a parade downtown. It's dark and dingy, but it has a great atmosphere, good music, good beer and wine, nice staff (only one person working, but she coped extremely well being so busy). Really loved it and will defiantly return.

Funky bar, oldest bar in Houston. A piece of history!!! Lit up my candlelit. Very relaxed & friendly, not pretentious at all. The bartender was very attentive, and great bar to start up conversations with random people. Right in front of market Square Park, great for people watching. Loved it!

Great old space, dark and full of character. Decades worth of initials and names carved in the bar. Bartender was friendly, did not get a negative vibe at all. There was even incense burning, with drip candles, so kind of a 60s feel- almost European wine bar you'd find in an alley. You must visit at least once, just to... More

This place was so dark. You felt like you were in New Orleans. They have a good beer selection and friendly staff. It is supposed to be the oldest bar in Houston and haunted.

According to the plaque outside this is one of the oldest buildings in Houston. Our carriage driver dropped us here when we asked to go to the old part of town where we could get a drink. I believe he said it was the oldest bar in town. The bar had great service. It was really cool. Some say it's... More

And when guest come in from out of town, this is a place we take them as well as it is funky, low key and the oldest bar in town. Just wine and beer, no mixed drinks and go upstairs if it happens to be open at that time. Love La Carafe!

Great old building in downtown Houston that started out as a bakery now serves wine and beer. The bar is heavy wood, carved up yet preserved, and the historical photos are very interesting. Worth a quick drink to see it.

La Carafe is an antique bar located nearly dead center in the heart of Houston, I had never heard of it and stumbled upon it on Saturday. What a nice and quaint experience… although I didn’t see any ghost the place looks like it holds lots of tales…. If only the walls could talk….. great place to meet for a... More

I was given a heads up that the bartender was a bit testy ("until he warms up to you") and the place is cash only. I actually saw the bartender say to a customer, "That's all?" for a tip. Maybe the locals enjoy watching tourists get "the treatment", but I think the guy just gets off on being an @$$... More
