Last September I enjoyed the veggie burger so I was really looking forward to it on this visit. Yesterday I popped in during the afternoon to check that the veggie burger is still available and the young man behind the bar said it was. We arrived at 18:30 and asked for the veggie burger. The waitress took our order but... More

My husband and I decided to try a new pub for Sunday Lunch, and knowing that The While Lion is advertised as restaurant standard for food (as the prices sure suggest!) we decided to indulge in a Sunday Lunch. For health reasons, I need to avoid gluten; nowadays, there are thankfully, usually a number of gluten free options at restaurants... More

Came for lunch. Greeted by a friendly waitress who was very good, efficient at getting our drinks and our food order, when our food arrived we weren't disappointed. However we noticed halfway through eating that the waitress had finished her shift, then unfortunately the service went down hill. Shame food was great.

This pub has real atmosphere. We felt welcome. Had the seafood entree (excellent) followed by the traditional battered cod and chips (perfect) and the vegetable lasagne (a bit disappointing), washed down with half pints of the local bitter. Great lunch.

Visited in a family group of 8 with kids. Lady showed us to a table and sighed when we told her our party size. The kids fish and chips was nearly £10. I got a sandwich and chips which cost slightly less than this but was still poor value for 2 slices of bread and about 8 chips.

After not visiting the pub for a few years I thought I would go in for old time's sake with my partner. What a mistake! After being met promptly on entry by a stern lady asking if she could help when we said we would only like drinks she scoffed us turned her back on us telling us to wait... More

A group of 20+ people and 3 dogs turned up having notified the pub that we would be coming for drinks, when we arrived, quite a few people wanted food. The barman dealt with it well and provided menus and told us they would do their best as it was busy. The food arrived in a decent amount of time... More

I couldn't see any vegan options online so I e-mailed ahead to ask if they made anything vegan; the response was that they unfortunately do not offer any vegan options. Please add some vegan options to your menu!

Visited for a drink Thursday evening. As we walked through the door immediately pounced upon by a waitress offering a menu. Then barely sat down we were offered another menu by a second waitress! Obviously they were desperate for custom - staff out-numbered the customers. Lovely looking restaurant, cosy and warm bar area. We wondered why so quiet and empty.... More

Description
The White Lion is a traditional coaching inn; with exposed timber and masonry, an abundance of comfortable corners to hide in, and always a warm and friendly atmosphere. Set on a riverside location in central Hebden Bridge, the inn has always been well known for fine country ‘pub’ dining, and its extensive choice of wines and real cask ales. All of which can be enjoyed throughout the year, whether that be in front of a roaring log fire, or in one of our scenic riverside cobbled courtyards.

Surrounded by true Yorkshire history, the stunning countryside of the Pennines, and the deep ravined valleys of Calderdale; the area is popular with walkers, cyclists, country lovers, and those just in search of a contrast to a hectic lifestyle. Although nestled in the centre of the town near the ‘Yorkshire Bohemian’ shops for which Hebden Bridge is quite famous; the countryside can be easily accessed by foot straight from the doorstep of the inn. And that same doorstep has frequently offered a place of respite to many attempting the Pennine Way, or the more recent Tour De France cycle route. If sight-seeing is more your activity, then the famous sites of Haworth (with its Bronte Sisters and Railway Children heritage) and the World Heritage Site of Salts Mill in Saltaire, are all within very easy access. Close enough to the main rail and motorway networks, and just far enough away from the vibrant cities of Leeds and Manchester; the White Lion is ideally based for business or leisure.

And if you were to require an excuse to stay with us for longer, then there are 10 spacious en-suite rooms to choose from. The newly refurbished Boutique bedrooms, with Victorian Roll-Top baths, Sleigh beds, and deep luxurious colours; are complemented by our cosy Courtyard Cottages - perfect for walkers, dog friendly, and with the riverside literally at your front door. All rooms benefit from free Wifi.

Dated 1657, the White Lion is reputed to be the oldest building in the beautiful town of Hebden Bridge, which is renown for its independent lifestyle, creativity, and philosophy - the Yorkshire way! We very much look forward to extending a real Yorkshire welcome to you soon...
