Several people recommended it for dinner and it lived up to and maybe exceeded expectations. It is a prix fixe with a 3 course or 5 course option. Each course has at least 2 options. Do not miss the soup! The sommelier was very helpful. Would definitely go back!

A restaurant built around the lowly, or mighty, depending on one's point of view, fungi. With the exception of dessert mushrooms are incorporated into every dish. And boy does it work! From the mushroom tart with its earthy flavors full of chocolate and overtones of dark berries to the mushroom soup with its almost broth like quality the flavors of... More

The restaurant is very charming. The staff is amazing and does everything they can to make sure you have a pleasant experience. The food is top notch! The mushroom tart is a family recipe, and it is to die for. And their foie gra is made to perfection! They also have an amazing wine list.

We were four foodies on a wine vacation, hailing from Louisiana. The concept of this restaurant was intriguing to all of us, especially the two chefs in our group.... couldn't wait to get there! Service here is good. We were mostly disappointed with the food. Mushroom risotto not creamy, mushroom tart hadn't too much flavor. Nothing to rave about.... and... More

I was really excited to finally get to this place. I first traveled the region in 2005 but unfortunately did not make it. This time, I made sure to make it. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed. The good: service was great (only two tables were served that night) The bad: Anytime I hear a microwave going off in the kitchen... More

This was a suggestion from a local, and were we grateful. A truly memorable meal. The mushroom dishes were spectacular, and everything else was great to excellent. Good service, warm surroundings. Well worth a detour.

This restaurant was amazing! If visiting, it's a must for any foodie. The mushroom risotto was spectacular and the prix fix menu was a good value for the quality of the food and ingredients. Warning: if you don't like mushrooms, you might want to have a conversation with your server!

We had a lovely dinner, great food, wine and company! Every menu item was enjoyed! The standouts, as per other reviewers were definitely the mushroom tart and stroganoff. The service was efficient and thoughtful without being intrusive. I absolutely recommend for a special night out or a Northwest fungus fix!

I've had it on my "to do" list to dine at the Joel Palmer house. When visiting Portland recently, I prioritized making the hour drive down for dinner, and I was not disappointed! Come with an appetite for the three or five course options that are best paired with a fine selection of wines. Diners with restricted diets might want... More

Description
Our family business took shape when my great-grandfather, Joseph Czarnecki, opened Joe's Tavern in 1916 in Reading, Pennsylvania. His son, Joseph Jr., carried on the tradition, transforming the original tavern into Joe's Restaurant and changing the focus to fine dining and wine with wild mushrooms (a family passion) as the centerpiece. My father, Jack Czarnecki, followed in his father's footsteps, taking Joe's Restaurant to a new level while maintaining the mushroom theme. Despite the success of Joe's, our family's lifelong desire was to combine great mushroom hunting with fine wine. This dream was fully realized in 1996 when my parents, Jack & Heidi, purchased The Joel Palmer House and moved the family and the restaurant west. Our cooking revolves around wild mushrooms and truffles which we gather ourselves and with friends. We have always striven to obtain locally raised ingredients in our cooking, and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables. Frequently we will use ingredients found in the cuisines of Mexico, China, Thailand, Poland, and India, so we call our cooking, “freestyle”. And, of course, we are working hard to create dishes which match the glorious wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.
