Hill End Estate was recommended to us by several locals as ‘the place for lunch’ and we were not disappointed – I must admit they had me at ‘famous pies’. From beginning to end we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The service was friendly and...prompt and even with COVID restrictions in place we were felt like we were having an old-fashioned dining experience. The lady who took our order called us by name and remembered it every time we spoke to her – that’s such a nice touch. (Pity I am unable to reciprocate the same respect towards her ☹)
It was a little chilly when we arrived, so we sat indoors in the cosy and quaint dining room. We both had one of their delicious pies and salad and they lived up to their reputation. Of the 3 other tables near us all the diners were local people which says something. After a while we moved to a table outdoors to have coffee and cake – equally as delicious. Again, the table adjacent to us accommodated four locals all of whom were talking about how lucky they were to have such a great meeting place that also served great food.
One of the entertaining moments related to the owners young dog which habitually got out of its large holding pen to come down to play with one of the guests dogs (which was old and tired and didn’t really want to play at all). The ambience was casual, friendly, and authentic.
We did not want to intrude into other diners space and privacy but it appeared to us that there is a thriving arts community in Hill End and that, in my view, only bodes well for the future of any community.
I am very happy to recommend Hill End Estate as a place to go, eat and just hang out and slow down for a while.More
