I recently had lunch at barter books with my wife, the food was a little expensive but very good quality. I always ask staff in restaurants if they get tips as I frequently find they dont, I was told by a member of staff "we don't get the tips they go to charity". I was disappointed to hear that &... Dear George, You misunderstand. The reason our staff don't require or get tips is because we pay them well above the normal wage plus benefits. No zero hour contracts. No low wages so that tips become a needed (and unreliable) source of income. Better than depending on tips? We think so - and so does our staff. More

Having visited two years ago we fondly recalled the warm fireplace, in we went, different art of the restaurant, but another warming coal fire. Liz had the Northumbrian rarebit, I had the hot beef roll, both with thrice cooked chips, I haven't had chips so good since my days at home with Mum & Dad ( 40) yrs. To pots... More

You can just do your own thing. Read second hand books, buy second hand books (at great prices), sit around, drink and eat or any combination thereof. Brilliant.

What a find. Gorgeous place, excellent food and very good service. Great value also, the family really enjoyed it. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Make sure you stop off for lunch and to soak up the atmosphere.

No better way to spend an autumn morning than browsing books in a stunning old building and finish off with coffee and an amazing bacon packed buttie full of flavour, mmm.

Hubby and I are here again today for brunch - cheese toastie....nom nom and a cuppa. We were here yesterday to spend the afternoon browsing the massive library of books available to buy and have a late lunch. Late lunch was a hot beef sandwich with thrice cooked chips and it was superb - sat next to a roaring coal... More

We just popped in for tea & cake in between wondering through the equally fascinating book store - the carrot cake & shortbread were delicious! Amazing setting, great place to visit!

I'm always drawn to the bookshop - the best I've been to. There is a problem in that I cannot help spending money when I didn't mean to. There's so much stock I can't help finding something interesting. It's great that you can get a decent snack as well.

Lunch in the Station Buffet was the perfect end to a blissful morning among the stacks. Excellent 'comfort food' (macaroni cheese topped with crispy bacon) and enormous scones. I am plotting a relocation to Northumberland so I can come here every day...

Description
Open every day except Christmas Day, 9:30-17:00. (Last orders for hot food, 16:00 Winter; 16:30 Summer) The Station Buffet is owned and operated by Barter Books - one of the largest secondhand bookshops in Britain and the home of the famous Keep Calm and Carry On poster. The inviting ambiance includes an open fire in three of the rooms, while the menu specializes in the owners' own preference for comfort food at its best - all of which is home-made, using local produce whenever possible. This ranges from soups to bacon sandwiches to Northumbrian rarebit to baked goods to die for! Also on offer: barista coffee, teas, hot chocolate - and, yes, wine, too!
