Reviewed yesterday NEW

we visited on recommendation of friends. Somewhat apprehensive after arriving at Southend central station and having to walk past alcoholics and drug addicts loitering and begging in the streets. The restaurant is a former Davys wine bar but does not , in my opinion live up to its heritage. The only ales on offer are expensive artisan bottles. Upon being... More

We headed to the Pipe of Port at 6pm on a Tuesday night as we had read the great reviews on here! We were the only people in there but it soon started getting busy which is testament to the great food and ambience. The pies are incredible and huge (do not have a starter!!!) The service was great and... More

A great meal here as you would expect and as always some great banter from the barman with jokes and fun whilst we waited to be seated. This place has some real characters and charm that is lacking from most other restaurants.

This is an old fashioned wine bar with saw dust on the floor, but don't think it is out dated; its not! I fully recommend their pies either with salad or baked potatoe. As it is in the basement, with only steps down as far as I am aware, this should be taken into account for older patrons. Nevertheless it... More

Booked table no probs with very friendly staff on arrival nothing to much comprehensive menu and prompt service however slightly disappointing on meal arrival as food needing seasoning and the famous cooking of the pie needed longer as was slightly tough and dauphinois potatoes just over raw !!! However saying that the cheese board was spot on and drinks fantastic... More

This restaurant was recommended to us to visit during our stay at Southend. The decor is lovely and the staff are very welcoming. We both had their larger on tap which was lovely. I had a minute steak which was cooked perfectly with garlic butter. My partner had an Australian fillet steak with chorizo butter. It was a perfect lunch!!

A real gem. Every element is pretty much perfection in my opinion. Fabulous food, wonderful wine - and excellent value on 'Retail Monday'. Beautiful decor, touches and ambience and spot on service.

We ate at the Pipe of Port on Saturday night with friends. Arrived on time for booking but still given the option to have a drink at the bar which was nice. It was at this point I was introduced to Hugo (The Hugo cocktail)... 1 word- delicious! I drank it all evening! The atmosphere was really comfortable and the... More

Description
Our crusty old Dickensian candle-lit dining rooms with mahogany tables and sawdust covered floors is one of the most atmospheric venues in town.
All our food is freshly made by ourselves, we use top quality ingredients from some of the best suppliers in the county. In addition to our standard menu we always have a few "specials" and at lunchtime we serve a light lunch/snack menu.

The Pipe of Port first opened its doors in 1976 as a Davy's Wine Bar before being taken over by sisters Janet & Sue and Sue's husband Stephen in 1981. One of the guiding philosophies of the family was that in an ever-changing world some things should always remain the same. This ideal is reflected in the decor and general welcoming and homely atmosphere of the Pipe of Port. The Restaurant is now run by Martin, who spent many years as manager of The Pipe of Port, before becoming a Wine Buyer for one of the UK's leading Wine Merchants. The philosphies and ideals that have defined the restaurant continue today - to bring you homemade classic & contemporary British food and world beating wines in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Our cellars offer a wide range of wines from around the world and we have travelled the globe seeking out interesting winemakers with a passion for their craft.
