Perfect place to celebrate with our eclectic family of gluten-free, vegetarian, omnivore as well as somewhat picky diners. This restaurant cheerfully accommodates all. Recommend reservations for a larger group. Service was excellent, although food was a little slow coming out of the kitchen (we were in no hurry). The manager kindly let us bring in a gluten free birthday cake... More

The food is terrific: fresh, well-prepared. Unfortunately the atmosphere is not conducive to a relaxing lunch, and there are often long lines waiting to order. But the food is worth the wait.

The staff was friendly, polite and very helpful, and the atmosphere was relaxing. We have been here before for lunch and look forward to another wonderful dinner. The tables were set with cloth tablecloths and napkins, tea candle and fresh flowers. We were served by the knowledgeable and personable staff. We started off with a creamy potato and leek soup;... Hello Alice, "Charming & wonderful food" - thank you! The entire staff sincerely appreciates the accolades and are delighted that you were so pleased with everything. "Best she ever had" linguine & Clams -- I would have to agree. We love this dish and the fact that we have local NC Littleneck clams to offer. Thank you for the recommendation... More

Yummy dinner last night. For lunch you order via counter and then they deliver food to your table. For dinner cloth tablecloths, napkins, tea candle and fresh flowers adorn the table shifting the ambiance to more upscale. Food and service always above average. Favorite feature here is that they have clearly labeled menu items and will adapt food, when possible,... More

It's one of the more popular places in Durham. Almost every time I drive by, the parking lot is full. A few months ago, and I forget exactly when, it wasn't full. I happened to catch them when they were switching between afternoon and evening menus, I think. The salad was delicious if a bit pricey. I need to go... More

Always great flavors and eager, cheerful staff. Specials are absolutely worth trying. Great brunch items. Dinner now sends waiter to your table. Always ready with help on drinks or entree choices.

For full disclosure I planned a surprise trip for my wife to the German shop next door that shall remain unnamed but on Valentine's night we were turned away from the aforementioned not offering what we sought or any type recompense. Much to our surprise the Refectory... say it correctly, was incredible, after we tramped across the lawn to arrive... More

A wonderful place to go for lunch and brunch. Nice atmosphere and tasty food. The service is great; one young woman in particular is a great hostess and adds life to the eatery.

Picked this place for lunch based on TripAdvisor recommendations. Was kinda surprised to find it's an "order at the counter" type of restaurant, but no bother, it's very good. Crab cake sandwich was most excellent, and the soups are to die for. Good variety on both the regular menu and the specials board. Definitely check it out if you are... More

We are in Durham most weekend on account of my elderly mother, and have therefore become very familiar with local restaurants. We had passed by The Refectory Cafe on many occasions, often to eat at the Guglhupf next door, and decided to give it a try. The exterior of the restaurant is unprepossessing - not much curb appeal - and... More
