This restauarantv is in a stunning location, right on the shoreline with views across the islands. The service was good, the menu OK, bust let down by very little local sourcing. I like Estrella Lager but surely a Scillies or Cornish lager (there are some fab ones) might have been more in keeping. Everything very well presented, and prices were... More

This is a fab beach cafe, just steps from the sand. Ideal for delicious cocktails or warming hot chocolate after a swim in the cold sea. The food is also great, but not quite outstanding. It is quite costly for a family to dine there, typically Tresco prices. Note the opening times on the website as its not 365 opening.... More

We called in here for lunch during our visit to the Island of Tresco its a very popular place and understandably so. Firstly the location is breathtaking and so is the food. My husband chose the fresh Cornish mackeral which he said was the best he had ever had. we are visiting the Isles of Scilly again next year and... More

Tresco is the most marvellous place and the Ruin Cafe adds to this great island. We had many coffees there and dinner on our last night. Lovely situation and staff.

We ate twice at the Ruin this year and had two of the nicest meals I have ever had. I chose hake with risotto one evening then lobster for the other which was incredible.served simply in butter, with leaves and saute potatoes. My husband can never resist their pizzas. The menu was abridged as it was the last night of... More

Probably not the best way to start a review. We had breakfast here on the morning after a wild wedding which was held here. Ordered breakfast and waited and waited and waited! Overhead the waiter stating with a straight face that there was a problem with the sausages, and they were experiencing a sausage shortage. I did laugh. It was... More

Surprisingly good for Tresco, with reasonable prices and a fair spread of dishes. Friendly staff and overlooking an interesting beach. The lower prices tend to keep away the undesirables, who would much rather spend our bank fees on overpriced snobbery elsewhere. Well worth a visit

Description
All day beach front dining with a wood-fired oven producing a range of delicious dishes. At the heart of the restaurant - and the menu - is the wood-fired oven that produces delicious pizzas, roasts the succulent beef and fresh fish, as well as baking the bread. It's fuelled with island wood, and brings a real flavour of the Mediterranean to the cooking. Other highlights from the menu include spicy crab linguini, confit of duck, pot-roasted shoulder of lamb and gnocchi with goat's cheese. For early risers, there is a delicious buffet breakfast available. The café takes its name from the ruined smuggler's cottage that forms part of its terrace. Uninhabited since the late-nineteenth century, there was a family of 12 living there in abject poverty when Augustus Smith arrived in the early 1830s. Their shared sleeping quarters consisted of a low loft in the roof space. Given that the neighbouring Watch House was the Coastguard boathouse from the 1820s, smuggling must have been a very tricky business for the old cottage's residents! We were absolutely delighted when Conde Nast Traveller magazine awarded the Ruin Beach Café the Gold Standard in its listing of favourite hotels, restaurants, bars and beach clubs from around the world in 2013. It's great to know that Tresco can hold its own with the very best in the world, as the other Gold Standard beach bars and clubs were in Bali, Barbados, St Barth's, Italy and the South of France.
