Great soups and sandwiches, fine selection of draft beer. Always fresh and delightful selection. Atmosphere takes you back to another era

On an early spring day, cold but sunny, we happened to arrive. in Lima at lunch time. As we parked directly in front of The American Hotel and a sign said "soup" I knew instantly I was in the right place. We were greeted by the hostess, waitress, bartender, cook and resident philosopher, Rose. The menu lists some 60 different... More

Always love to stop by The American Hotel and sink into the calm pace of the place. The food is great - the soups are almost legendary and their sandwiches and specials are terrific as well. Rose, Pat and Cindy make it feel like you are a guest in someone's home. The place is history itself and you should go... More

I have lived in the neighborhood for a long time, Have eaten here in the past, yet never reviewed this iconic location. I think people see the outside and are dissuaded from going in. I stopped there with friends last week and had lunch, Soups, name it they can whip it up, anything, great sandwich selection , good selection of... More

We have stopped here several times, both for dinner and lunch. The soups are always great. The specials are good too, they offered Roast pork dinner, my husband said it was good and the portions were right not too much. I as always had to try soup, as usual it was tasty. The service was good, no complaints, we like... More

It was extremely noisy; we could hardly hear each other. There was a dog wandering around the dining room -- is that even legal? I had the potato/artichoke soup, which is the only non-meat-laden choice on the menu (although I bet there was a chicken broth base), and it tasted of salt and nothing else. They gave us two tiny... The dining room loos as if it was still in the 1930s, but they offer an ever-changing plethora of soups - all house made.

Who ever heard of Lima, NY? We stumbled on while driving through central New York this fall. Charming old town with the American Hotel right on Main Street. The hotel dates from 1840 and looks it. The sign outside said "lunch and soup" so we stopped and were glad we did. Small old bar with tables and limited menu but... More

We started with an ice cold Rohrbach draft beer from the bar. I tried the zucchini & sausage soup and spouse tried the garbage plate soup. Soups are $4.00 for a cup and $4.50 for a bowl. The bowl is a much better deal. Back to the Limburger cheese sandwiches. Price ($6.25) was the same as last year, but we... More

This is a early American Hotel with an adjoining restaurant. The hotel looks both charming and eclectic. We did not see any of the rooms but the downstairs Men's room was a real step back into history for someone as old as us! Old water fixtures and a urinal that stood 44-5 feet tall with an overhead water container for... More
