About
Discover the unknown flavours of Indonesia. Indonesian restaurant showcasing recipes from over 600 of the archipelago’s islands. Translating to ‘tribe’ in Indonesian, Kaum is an authentic reflection of Indonesian ingredients, flavours and indigenous cooking methods. The generational recipes featured on the menu are rarely shared outside of the islands and are considered some of the best unknown dishes around the world. From bamboo grilling, fermentation, slow cooking to caramelise, pit roasting, manual grinding, and skewer grilling, Kaum uses traditional cooking techniques to demonstrate the true breadth of Indonesian food. As well as enjoying new flavours, Kaum’s menu allows for learning about the geographic origins of the dishes, introducing lesser-known regions of Indonesia such as Aceh, Sulawesi and Maluku.

Delicious Indonesian food with a sunset view on the beach right next to potato head. I was hugely surprised by the level of service and felt like a celebrity upon entrance. Food was good and reasonably priced, wine list a little pricey but consistent with other commercial type restaurants. Our waiter provided us with first class service! I can’t get over the professionalism!

This restaurant serves local food done with class. They were served up plated very nicely and in reasonable sharing portions. I feel though, that they tone down the spice level to cater to foreign tourists who are likely the ones dominantly visiting the restaurant, considering its location. No complaints though as the dishes we ordered were still delicious! Price is a little on the high side, but that comes with the ambience you are getting too. I love the minimalist decor and vibe of the restaurant, good place to enjoy good food and chill with a drink or two while enjoying the views!

The staff was exceptionally polite and the food was very good. We even were given an extra dessert to help us celebrate our anniversary which was very thoughtful. Unfortunately, both my girlfriend and I became very ill and ultimately needed to go to the hospital for treatment the next day, which forced us to spend a lot of money on medical bills, flight changes and additionally hotel room nights.

Husband & I had been recommended this place so we booked online before we left Australia & advised them of the special occasion we’d be celebrating. Website led us to expect a fine dining experience with a smart casual dress code but we were surprised at the 2 guys seated behind us wearing Bintang singlets-not as upmarket as expected. Also disappointed that booking 2wks in advance did not entitle us to a window seat, we were treated the same as the walk-ins with the singlets! Add to this the lack of air conditioning & it just felt a bit less than expected & less than many other less expensive venues we’ve dined at while in Bali. I will give a shout out to the wine waiter who replaced our glasses of bubbly with fresh ones without any prompting from us as he’d noticed their lack of bubbles after they went out. Now that is good service! Food was tasty but not really anything different from any good takeaway in Melbourne, sorry to be blunt. Good rendang, crispy duck a bit dry but plenty of it, cabbage side dish was warm & had lovely dressing to spoon over rice, & choice of sambal blends was something different. Kaum is located in the stunning Desa Potato Head complex but that’s not enough to justify some lackluster service from senior staff or the upmarket prices being charged. Sorry, I really wanted to enjoy this place more than I did.

Our experience at Kaum restaurant was absolutely amazing throughout. After spending the day chilling at Potato Head Beach Club, my boyfriend and I headed up to Kaum for an early dinner watching the sunset. We were seated outside with a wonderful view of the sea and the sun setting which was magical. Our waiter, Chandra was super helpful in explaining the menu and the background to their food. He was also super clear in explaining what I could and couldn't have as I'm gluten free and a lot of their food is cooked with Soy Sauce. After Chandra consulted the chef, we ordered Nasi Goreng Rempah (authentic wok-fried rice), Ayam Berantakan (really succulent and tasty chicken) and the Rendang (a beautiful Indonesian curry). Overall, very satisfied with our visit, thank you Kaum!

A place to try food from various Indonesian regions with a more upmarket atmosphere. Lunch time was quiet, but that meant scoring a table near the window, with a view of the ocean and the beach club downstairs. Had the pork belly skewers, fish and prawn dumplings, coconut rice ( which the waitress kindly ordered half serve for me as dining solo), and a glass of Indonesian wine. Food was yummy and service was great. Will definitely come back next time in Bali.

We went to Kaum for a special birthday and also a recommendation, well we weren’t disappointed at all it lived up to our expectation and more. Food was out of this world divine and the atmosphere was fantastic with a good vibe going on, we had a table that overlooked the Beach Club as well. Our waitress was Dayu and she was fantastic - very bubbly with a pleasant smile and great knowledge in explaining the menu etc, also filling our glasses without any prompting. It was certainly a fantastic night and we will be back again before we leave home to NZ. Thank you

Outstanding night at Kaum for my wife’s birthday. The location on the first floor at Potato Head let’s you be near the action without being right amongst it but it was the food and service that stole the show. We did the set meal ($37AUD++) which was fantastic. Gabo Gabo, ceviche and broth were all excellent and the chicken and pork equally so. Lots of food so we had to take some home! Desert was great as were the cocktails. Service was prompt and attentive and made it feel like a special night. Would definitely return.

On our last day of our Bali holiday we ended up having lunch at Kaum’s. What an amazing experience, the restaurant is located in the Seminyak Potato Head complex with a beautiful view on the beach. We were most warmly welcomed and as we were not very hungry, we were advised to look at the dishes to share. After lovely cocktails (Kaum offers quite a range of very interesting cocktails with a twist) we had the best gado gado ever, excellently cooked beef and a delicious dessert. We decided to inquire about the possibility to come back in the evening for dinner; we booked a table and returned in the evening for a dinner that even exceeded our earlier lunch experience. The staff was incredibly friendly, all knew that we had been there earlier during the day and made us feel very welcome. Kaum is a must when visiting Seminyak for exquisite Indonesian food, highly recommended!

We went to Kaum as my fiancé wanted to go potato head The location is obviously well known and quite pleasing. Kaum itself is on the upper level and a little bit away from the calm. We went to the balcony for a sunset drink before eating inside. The decor is a little muddy inside which adds to the sophistication of the place. We started with the tuna ceviche and the beef rendang. Both were pretty good. The tuna was fresh and lively in the mouth with the seasoning about right. Could have probably done with a little more lime to zing the dish up. The beef rendang was rich and pungent and the meat was well braised. The level of spice was right too although we probably would have liked it a little spicier We then ordered the pork belly skewers and a bitter gourd and spinach curry. The skewers were ordered by almost everyone. They're quite dramatic in their entry as they're on a small grill and smoked all the way to your table. Ours came smoking but it was not scorching hot, but mildly warm. We didn't complain but probably should have. The pork itself was average. There was more fat than pork and it wasn't particularly nice. The bitter gourd curry came in a coconut and was quite nice. The gourd was quite bitter so we wouldn't recommend if you're not prepared for a very bitter aftertaste. Overall, a nice evening with OK, not great, food.

We last visited Kaum in 2019 and, based on our last visit were really looking forward to eating there again, also curious to see if the standards we’d experienced pre-COVID were still being upheld. We had another superb meal - smoked tuna, braised pork cheek, crispy duck and basil goreng were all faultless. The outlook over potato head at night was stunning. The service was something else - professional, very knowledgeable about gluten free offerings, but also very enthusiastic and pleasant. The service made our night. Thank you again Kaum, for another perfect dining experience!

Visited here with a group of mates fro dinner as it was recommended by a friend. Located upstairs at Potato Head Beach Club - Seminyak. Great view of the sunset from the terrace just outside of the restaurant above the beach club. The food is Indonesian fusion. I found it rather heavy to eat - especially the "Pork Cheek" dish) Overall the food is quite good but left me feeling too full as the food was quite heavy on the tummy. Couldn't drink too much afterwards. Not the cheapest place to eat. Overall, it was a good dining experience with very attentive floor staff. Please note: This is only my experience. You experience may be different to mine.
