About
Set in a converted house in central Franschhoek, the atmosphere at Le Bon Vivant is homely and relaxed, while reminiscent of contemporary French restaurants. The glass wall allows you to see Pierre Hendriks and his team at work. Tables are also available in the shaded garden next to the restaurant for lunch and dinner on warm summer evenings.

Le Bon Vivant is a great restaurant with beautifully prepared and presented food. I had the trio of soups to start while my husband had tuna prepared 3 ways followed by a trio of venison also prepared 3 ways, as part of the surprise tasting menu. I had the Franschhoek trout for my main which was outstanding. All the food was described in detail by our server, but although the restaurant was not too busy, service was quite slow. (Time to allow guests to savour the meal perhaps.) We sat outside on their deck to enjoy the fresh air and watch the stars come out. A very enjoyable evening in the foodie capital of South Africa.

There are sooooo many choices in Franschhoek so where does one start? You read a review or five and then plump for a place. This evening was a a great culinary success. The chef owner Pierre Hendriks is visible for all to see in the restaurant; there is a large glass window to see into the kitchen. From our observations the team he leads works well and we didn't see any Ramsayesque histronics of arm waving, throwing or shouting which does give one a little peace of mind. The waitress was lovely and had a mischievous sense of humour. We all shared the four Dutch croquettes which were a quirky little extra. Both soups we were presented illustrated how soup can be taken to another level. I had the selection plate of starters and the individual flavours were fantastic. In particular the tuna selection were impressive as you wouldn't have thought that a fish could be prepared in three different ways side by side and all taste so individual. My main of crayfish tail and sweetbreads was beautifully presented and the content was delicious. All this washed down with a bottle of their locally family produced pinotage made for a great way to spend a couple of hours. I was impressed that the place did not try and get two sittings through the restaurant and also they had not crammed in as many table as they could. I also loved the R10 discretionary charge which goes to the local SA animal charity for spaying and animal welfare. I increased my contribution to R50. Thus a local business is assisting some of the worlds less fortunate animals and in the process promoting good animal husbandry. A great idea that is to be commended. Upon departing we had a cheery wave from Pierre.......a chap who clearly loves his craft and also appears to be living his dream.......successfully.

There is plenty of good food to be had in Franschhoek but our meal at Bon Vivant was by far the best. We both had an imaginative and lovely tuna starter followed by quail and duck for my wife and trout for myself. This was the first time in my life that I have been offered rare, medium or well done trout - I opted for rare and it was utterly delicious. The service was quite outstanding, both knowledgeable and friendly. A great experience.

We first came here soon after it opened - about 10 years ago. The food this time was equally sensational. The Springbok loin was so tender and delicious. The desert, or deserts I should say as we had the "combination" were to die for. We had a great bottle of Pinotage to wash it down with and the overall cost was very reasonable for the quality of the food. Pierre, we will be back!!!

Menu and wine list to keep all happy. Such detail in the servings and presentation! Went for dinner "outside" on a Franschhoek summer evening. Ordered starters and mains. All the tastes and flavours as put out in the menu - will end up in your mouth. Prices are not cheap, BUT the preparation and quality of the dishes - it can not be cheap. Not over the top though.

This is the most under-rated restaurant in Franschhoek. Pierre has been cooking outstanding food in Franschhoek since the glory days of Camil Haas at Bouillabaisse and Margot Janse at Le Quartier. Camil and Margot are now gone but Pierre remains (thank goodness) and continues to cook honest, delicious plates of food night after night. Great food (the tuna starter is a classic and my venison was delicious), great service, a lovely room. Why this restaurant is ignored by the 'Eat Out' awards each year is an annual mystery. On holiday from Scotland, we eat in all the top restaurants in South Africa every year and this is one of the best. Bravo, Pierre!

I booked online and it gave me only the option of a table inside. However, when we arrived for our 7.00 p.m. booking we were offered to sit outside if we wanted to - which we did since it was a very warm January evening. Our server was very pleasant and answered our menu queries clearly. We had the bitterballen appetisers - mmmmm! Delicious. My husband had the trio of soups and I had the combination of starters. Followed by springbok and fish respectively. Then we finished it all off with the sharing platter of desserts. This was our last evening meal of our holiday as the following evening we would be on our way to the airport at 7.00 p.m. It was a most enjoyable experience and, if/when I'm back in Franschhoek I will definitely want to eat there again.

It is nice to see the chef preparing the dishes behind the glass wall and we can see how passionate he is and also very friendly he is with his staff. Refined food of good quality. They have 2-course and 3-course menus which are good value for money.

The restaurant is in a very old building with very high ceiling. It is nicely set out with plenty of room between tables. The food is ‘small plates’ (bigger than tapas) which enables you to choose several and share them between you. The service was good and friendly and it was a most enjoyable evening. It is situated a few minutes drive outside the town on a very quiet road.

We first went in 2013 and have returned most years. I really like the place and rate the food highly but my wife doesn’t share that view. You have the option to dine on their large L shaped veranda / stoop or be completely outside or inside as the weather dictates. My steak this year was perfectly cooked and well presented. It’s sort of between a nice restaurant and out and out fine dining. Somewhere to go for a special meal. Service is generally good but not excellent.

The best good, service, and ambiance in Franschhoek. The two course menu was superb and excellent value for money - we both had the tuna tartare starter and my wife the had the line fish and I had the venison. All the dishes looked beautiful and tasted wonderful. After these, we couldn't resist the souffle dessert with glasses of a lovely dessert wine - a perfect finish to the meal. The wines we had with the first two couses weren't cheap but they were very high quality and good value for money. It was great to finally meet Pierre Hendriks after our meal and to be able to thank him for so many memorable meals through the past 10 years.

Not so good this time. Ambiance and service good but the menu structure most complicated. It offers two and three dishes prices based on the menu but does not mention the limitations in choice. It takes ages to decipher which dishes can be chosen and spoils the experience. Such selective choice should be clearly stated on the menu for each individual cost.

Yes, we come here every year during our annual visit to the area....and I would´nt miss it! We were in the Western Cape for almost 6 weeks and ate at many of the best eateries in the area. Le Bon Vivant is one of the very best (my husband it adamant that it is THE BEST!) The ambiance is lovely, the service excellent and the menu is so very interesting. I love Pierre´s tasting menus and especially enjoy his dessert tasting platters. Absolutely wonderful. Excellent value too. Can´t beat it.

Truly this is one of the best meals I had during the month we spent in South Africa. I would give it 5 stars if I didn't have to have things taken back that I can't eat. I told them I'm gluten-intolerant, and need a gluten-free meal, and I was told it would not be a problem. My gf bread was brought on a tray in a pile of other breads...directly against them which I can't do. The next dish was brought with soy sauce on it. I asked if it were gf soy sauce, which resulted in that being replaced as well. The waiter, continued to work with me, and listed all the ingredients for me, so that I could continue to be aware of potential problems. The returns made the meal much slower. However, did I mention this was an amazing meal? The flavors were wonderful, and dessert exceptional! I loved this meal. Would have loved it more if it hadn't been necessary to be concerned.

We have been coming to Franschhoek for 15 years and have seen restaurant come and go but fortunately LBV is the consistent of our visits. Each time we come the menu always offers the same challenge of what to chose as it all looks so good. This year we are visiting twice to make sure we don’t miss out. Compared to Le Coin which is very French with everything covered in rich sauces, LBV has beautifully presented food that is much cleaner on the palate. Still the best restaurant in Franschhoek, so remember to book long before you arrive as it is always full.
