I had the best food of my trip at this restaurant. I loved every single dish, some were very innovative - which I could imagine to be on the menu at Michelin stared restaurants. The service was amazing - I have found that SA in general has great service, but this place was outstanding. Our waiter diligently explained the menu to us, and when we wanted share some of the dishes, the plates came already split. The professional but friendly service is completed with the chef stopping by and having a nice chat at all the tables. Do not go there if you are looking for a view - there is no view, but I would imagine the restaurant would have a great ambiance in the winter with a feeling of having dinner at a nice chalets in the mountains.

Calm, relaxing setting with professionally attentive staff who made us very welcome. Food and wine selections were perfect for a high quality lunch that proved to be great value when the bill arrived. The Chef Richard is talented and very modest but a clear master of his trade, presenting the very best cuisine we experienced in the Franschhoek region. Matched ingredients without the unnecessary frills of many of his competitors. Good enough to want us to go back to Franschhoek, if only for another lunch in the Arkeste. Thank you Richard and also to David our waiter

We (a group of 6 adults) had dinner at Arkeste to mark the end of our trip in Franschhoek. We all went for the Chef’s menu with wine pairing, and this proved an excellent choice. Not only did the carefully paired food and wine combinations know how to tickle our senses, the staff was very welcoming, knowledgeable and well-trained. We left the place with smiles on our faces and some lovely memories. Thank you team Arkeste!

Whilst we found the food and service to be excellent, we didn't find the overall experience to be first class. The chef/owner has taken over an old restaurant, which is run down and tatty in places. We were seated facing out onto a wooded/scrub area, which did not help. White table cloths do not make a fine dining experience. We dined in several of the local restaurants including The Orangerie, Graaf, Grand Provence, Protege and Chefs Warehouse found that these restaurants were in a different league for an overall all experience.

The manger at Maison Montagne at Dieu Donne, recommended we try Arkeste as our second option for dinner having visited their on-site restaurant ROCA on our arrival. Which too is walking distance from the hotel. Great meal and service was friendly.

We tried out Arkeste for the first time today and the food was incredible! We opted for the set menu which was fairly priced for the quality of the food. All the dishes were perfectly balanced and simple but creative. The service was top notch, Angie presented all the dishes perfectly, besides one of the courses which was brought out and presented by Richard himself! Wine and water glasses were kept full at all times. Outstanding in a town with already high standards!

Situated at the lower end of Chamonix Wine Estate and a few kilometers up the hill from Franschhoek main street lies this gem of a restaurant. The limited menu of 5 starters, 4 mains and 3 desserts offers fine dining at an affordable price. Starter portions are reasonable size as are main dishes. For light eaters 2 starters would suffice. My steak tartare and our duck were excellent. My wife's starter of artichoke with wild mushroom was not to her taste. The artichoke was fine but the wild mushroom she did not eat (it was a bit of an acquired taste). When we received the bill my wife's starter had been removed . According to the manager "if you didn't enjoy the food then we will not charge you for it". Quite unexpected as there was nothing wrong with the dish. Service was first class with very well trained waiters. While the wine list is a little on the pricey side, the food represents value for money given the quality, innovation and presentation of the dishes. We will go again.

It may look like your average vineyard restaurant, but Arkeste is anything but! We heard from friends who live locally that they had being trying to get into Askeste so was immediately curious and set out to find a table, which we did for Saturday lunch. On arrival we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and an incredible buzz of people already seated. The restaurant was filling up quickly (it was almost 13:00) so we knew we were in for a treat. Guided by our waiter "Jevon" we ordered the steak tartar with cured beef, parmesan crème, cured yolk, which looks like an egg but isn't, herbs and a truffle vinaigrette, which was sensational but came in 2nd place to my wife's starter...... The Baked Alaska Rainbow trout. The flavors of the trout mixed with citrus salsa, cucumber, caviar (these are like little bombs exploding in your mouth) and ginger took you on a taste bud journey of pure eating pleasure. Mains next. Confit duck breast with sunflower seeds, beetroot, orange and tamarind sauce and the Miso Beef, oyster mushrooms and black pepper sauce, both dishes again did not disappoint and our plates were left empty. You will find Chef Richard Carstens, who has a history of working in top restaurants in South Africa and Australia causualy chatting amongst his diners and just making sure that all is OK. You don't see this happening enough these days so it was great to see. The restraunt manager, Clifford can also be found serving and attending to tables, which illustrates how well the team from kitchen to table works. Our expectations continued to be exceeded with our choice of deserts that was suggested by Chef Richard. The Chocolate mousse was a delicate texture of smooth dark chocolate and was a twist on what you would normally expect from a mousse. AND Gorgonzola ice cream (yes gorganzola) with poached apples, honeycomb, yoghurt and macadamia, which was a total surprise of wonderful flavors akin to having a cheese plater and ice cream in one - it really works. By the end of the meal we were planning our next visit so for those who realy enjoy serious food book now before the tourists arrive.

We dined at Richard Carstens’ restaurant in Franschhoek and had a great taste experience. Set in the forest opposite Chamonix wine estate it was a great romantic dinner. My wife said her seafood starter was awesome and my Salmon Trout Alaskan bake with salmon ice cream was amazing. I’m not sure why top restaurants prefer to use sirloin rather than rump, as there were a few pieces of sinew in my steak mains dish, but that’s what you get with sirloin. I still enjoyed it though. My wife said her pork belly mains was delicious. Dessert was also great and for the prices we found it to be good value for top end restaurants. The wine list was a bit sparse but we thoroughly enjoyed the Chamonix Sauvignon Blanc, also a reasonable price compared to restaurants in Cape Town.

We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the Western Cape and this restaurant is the best. It’s location is a the foot of the mountains in an amazing wooded location. When arriving the place looked closed. We parked and walked around to the back of the restaurant and entered a fabulous up market but unpretentious restaurant which felt like we were in the woods. Greeted by informal but professional staff. We all had three courses which we hardly ever do and they were all fabulous. As was the wine that the waiter helped us choose. The owner/chief came out to chat with us and kindly explained the deserts. He was clearly passionate about his food and cared about his customers. All four of us could not think of anything negative to say in this review. Fabulous!!!!

What a great find! We celebrated my father-in-law’s birthday at Arkeste and were blown away by the fantastic, innovative menu. The service and atmosphere were both outstanding too. We appreciated Chef Richard coming out of the kitchen to greet us and tell us a bit about the menu. The food was absolutely world class! I can highly recommend this restaurant - what a treat!

The food and service at Arkeste was by far one of the best we have ever had. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and clearly had as much passion for food as the chef. Every single course was beautifully executed with layers of exquisite flavour. Superb! Highly recommend and we will be back when we visit SA again.

I wish I took pictures! The empty restaurant made us feel a bit sceptical, but I had THE BEST beef tartare I've ever had in my life! All the other courses was also very nice. Setting is very relaxed and it feels like you are dining somewhere in the knysna forest. Well worth the visit!

A wonderful evening where where the Arkeste team looked after every aspect of our dinner. Special thanks to manager Clifford, knowledgeable and friendly server Annaleen and even the dessert chef who took time out of the kitchen to explain the dessert selection to us. Do try the Salmon/Trout Baked Alaska starter as well as the beef tartare... Easily our best meal out in years. Can't wait to come back!

Tonight we had the most amazing meal of our trip to South Africa. My husband had the chef’s menu with wine pairing and enjoyed each delicious, creative course. I had the tomato salad and the lamb for my main. It was the best lamb I’ve ever eaten. The restaurant is in a lovely wooded setting and is cosy and comfortable. Great wait staff made it a very special evening for our last night in Franschhoek.
