I would actually give this restaurant 6 stars if I could. From the booking right throuhout after lunch the experience was amazing, fantastic. I don’t have the vocabulary to describe the food, an 8 course or 10 course menu with no further options, but its not needed. The Japanese inspired menu for this year includes dishes like Malay Tuna, Seabass and Karoo Lamb. So well prepared and full of flavour that I can only recommend you taste it yourself. The sweets are strong flavoured chocolate mousse, pieces of chocolate brownies and buttermilk cream with sour cherries, absolutely heaven. The service is simply outstanding and staff is properly trained. But informal and the waiters are bilingual and has served us in our home language, though this restaurant I think gets far more international visitors than local. An exceptional experience for special occasions, though we didn’t go for an occasion, but the food made it an occasion. Ive read the negative critisism on this restaurant and its all about the price which I can understand, it is expensive and mark ups are high. However I still regard it as good value for money, as it is really in a different class, stylish, sublime flavours and food to dream off. Last but not the least, 18 chefs are on duty, and many waiters and a sommilier to serve the guests.

10 course tasting menu with no choices. Oh dear.... my picky husband would present a challenge for this restaurant! However, not so! The restaurant was very flexible in accomodating my husbands lack of interest in anything fishy. We both agreed that our meals were fantastic, inventive and very different from most restaurants we have been to in the world. Each course was beautifully presented, and had interesting flavours. Substitutions for the fish were inventive, and not just a vegetarian alternative. The sommelier recommended a fantastic bottle of SA wine to go with the meal, that didn't cost the earth (and restored our faith in all South African wines after a few bad bottles at other restaurants!) This restaurant is expensive, but so worth the money for that special night out whilst holidaying in SA. We'd go again in a flash!

This was a quite remarkable experience, more like culinary theatre than dinner. Every one of the ten courses was a miracle of flavour, top quality ingredients, visual design and presentation. Seven of them came with a perfect wine pairing and with a delicious beer. A whole team of servers delivered the dishes, each explaining them with obvious passion and knowledge. The dining area is quite plain, but with such dazzling food, that’s not a problem. Of course this is all very expensive, especially by South African standards, but it’s worth every single Rand. Definitely in my top three meals of the past decade.

Had the chef's experience and wine pairings here with a group of friends. Some of the food (the ramen course and the intro chicken chawanmushi) was spectacular, some very good. Delicious wines with some interesting choices, so that was fun, Some issues with oversalting and over fussiness but overall, great value. Service was a problem. While friendly and knowledgable, the overall pace was way out of whack. We were either being rushed to finish off a course as the next one arrived, or else left sat for up to 20 minutes (with no wine). These sorts of tasting menus depend on pacing as much as anything else, and they seemed kind of overwhelmed. There's a course where the table moves over to the chef's station for a little lecture about it, and this seemed to cause bottlenecks with the overall service. Also - the room is very blah and was extremely hot the night we were there, to the point of being uncomfortable - it was also very brightly lit. Did not feel like a five star dining room. La Petite Colombe is moving to a new venue in a few months, and so this is obviously they last hurrah in their present home - hopefully the ambiance will improve.

Quite disappointing. Yes the food was good and innovative, and the staff were very pleasant, but the overall dining experience and atmosphere was really lacking. The gap between courses was quite delayed, which over multiple courses really started to drag. When the bill arrives you really can’t help but think there are so many better dining experiences in SA and even in Franschhoek, for far less money. Best was the staff. Worst was the atmosphere/overall experience.

Ate here and although the food was pretty good the restaurant lacked atmosphere. To much noise and comings and goings. Not an intimate experience. The service was average and rather slow. We had a stroppy waitress who took exception to some of our comments when we waited longer than expected for a couple of courses. Very overpriced for the quality of food and the wine pairings were extortionate at 1100 rand each! Other restaurants in Franscheok are better food wise and value wise.

This was our second visit to this restaurant. It was good but unfortunately didn’t have the same wow factor as last time. Perhaps the fact waiters and waitresses listing off complex mixtures of ingredients has become common place and now longer amazes. There is still a lot of theatre but again this loses its novelty once you have been there once and are really going there for the food / taste combinations. The food was good but they seem to be stretching it and probably would do well to reduce the number of courses on the tasting menu. In addition to this I noticed and I am sure I was not the only one the manager was visibly annoyed with a number of staff. Any issues should have been dealt with out of sight. From a pricing point of view, it is clear that it is aimed at the mid to upper end of the market but in my opinion there are better options in Franschhoek and beyond. Still worth a visit.

After all the positive reviews and recommendations and our excellent experience at it’s big-sister La Colombe in Constantia, our expectations may have been too high but unfortunately we were rather disappointed. The restaurant lacks atmosphere, the service was average and not very enthusiastic and the very pricy food good but not exceptional. The wine-pairing was very stingy and far less generous than that of the table next to us (different waiter). To the restaurant’s credit, when I complained towards the end of the meal we were only charged the cost of 1 wine-pairing instead of 2. We have eaten in many restaurants in the region but there are plenty who deserve a better rating such as Gåte at Quion Rock or Cavalli. We don’t mind to pay for value but we left with the tale of the The Emperor’s New Clothes in mind.

A proper fine dining experience with a range of inventively cooked and presented dishes, some with a real sense of theatre. Food is up there with the best places I have eaten in London, NYC, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Service was impeccable, the best we've had in SA I reckon. The tables are very well spaced, which is necessary for some of the trolleys used to deliver food but almost too spaced out. I felt a little marooned and it subdued the atmosphere a little. The wine list is excellent and good value for this sort of venue. The wine tasting which accompanies the tasting menu is good but if there's four or more of you, I'd suggest sorting out your own selection will be better value. It is expensive, very expensive for SA, but still less than you'd pay for similar food in London.

We could not fault the food which was outstanding. However, we were taken aback that the only option was an extensive fixed tasting menu. Our fault for not checking that this has changed since our last visit. We have not experienced this lack if choice anywhere before and would not normally want to go through some 8/10 courses with associated interruptions. The staff were highly trained but we really don’t need to be asked so often if we are enjoying it or to have everyone introduce themselves. We would not return unless a more realistic menu was introduced.

We had a chef's tasting menu bought for us as a Christmas present by one of our daughters. We expected something good, what we got was something memorable and simply outstanding. From the second we arrived we were met with attentive service, outstanding food and drink and a lovely atmosphere in very elegant surroundings. We were served phenomenal food with a mixture of flare and showmanship which was never intrusive and added to the experience. It is certainly a meal we will remember and if we venture to Franschhoek again, or even Stellenbosch, we will certainly return for this wondrous experience.

This was the first time here and we were interested to know whether they lived up to the standard of the much lamented Tasting Room, that occupied the site in Le Quartier Francais before them. In short they did. The meal was excellent in every respect and the wine pairings worked well. One point for them to note. We were sitting in the middle of the restaurant facing the rear window and the unobscured sun was quite an irritation until it went down behind the hills and trees. The staff just said ”oh it will go away soon” and of course they were right. This is an expensive destination restaurant for South Africa but if you are familiar with Michelin starred restaurants in Europe, then you are getting that quality and attention to detail at a significantly lower price. They are moving to a new location outside Franschhoek centre shortly. Highly recommended. It was a great experience.

Exceptional service; knowledgeable staff; DELICIOUS food; lots of theatre! I opted for the vegetarian menu option and was impressed that they could recite my nut allergies to me as I sat down and informed me which cocktails I shouldn’t have. I ordered a rose based cocktail - this was very medicinal and wasn’t nice at all, however that’s where the negative feedback ends. Go hungry because there is a lot of food to be had! I particularly enjoyed the interactive elements, where one of the courses was at the chefs table. The sous chef presenting this dish clearly explained why it was important to understand the dish - his passion really came through! The dishes are nicely paced, and even though I went with plenty of space in my belly, I struggled to eat my dessert and the petit fours! Exceptional - I’d recommend you book in advance!

The set menu with wine pairings was absolutely delicious! The service was exceptional and informative. This was truly a fabulous experience. From the presentation of dishes to the chef coming to our table and asking how our meal was. The atmosphere was fantastic-although I believe in May they are moving to the Leeu Estates. The wine was perfectly paired with each dish. Our set menu had five appetizer/ entrees that had so much incredible flavor , presentation and paired perfectly with the wine! The other three items were all delectable desserts also paired with the most tasty wines. The service, atmosphere, attention to detail, food and wine make La Petite Colombe a unforgettable dining experience!!

Everyone in our party went with the Chefs and the Fine & Rare Wine Experience—it was brilliant. The chef intertwines fun and innovation into each of the courses—the presentations as well as the balance of flavors are magical. The servers spend time explaining each of the dishes which adds to the appreciation of the chef’s artistry. This is one of those dining journeys that are enhanced when you are with other couples—as the creativity of the food greatly elevates the gastronomic conversation. Adding the wine completes the entire experience. Check out my photos for more details.
