Driving through Hopewell yesterday we noticed this small restaurant with it's name "Tomatellos" (a play on Tomatillos) emblazoned over the door. When we got home looked it up on Trip Advisor and took a gander at its menu. That was enough to convince us to...give it a try. And, having a reservation (which really wasn't needed), we drove back to Hopewell tonight. The restaurant itself is quite small--narrow really, with a counter and the kitchen on the left and a row of tables on the right (they do have some outdoor tables, but this March evening was too cold for that). The place is simple, clean and pleasant, but not fancy. The menu is Mexican/Latin eclectic with some quite creative (and perhaps unique) items. My wife and I started off by sharing a bowl of their chicken/tortilla soup. Now, we've had Mexican Tortilla Soup with and without chicken many times. But Tomatello's recipe is quite different (small chunks of char-grilled chicken with thin strips of tortillas in a mildly spicy tomato broth) which was absolutely delicious and perhaps the best chicken/tortilla soup we've ever had. For our main course, my wife opted for their special Mahi Mahi tacos, which were good but a bit too salty. I chose their "Chorizo Loco" (one of theii innovative menu items not seen on any other Mexican restaurant menus)--it was basically a very fancy and filling Hot Dog with the Dog being a whole Chorizo placed two flour tortillas and covered with a creamy smooth Guacamole, some small chunks of mango, cheddar cheese and several other condiments and it was very good. I was a little concerned before I ordered it because it was priced at only $4.50 (on the entree menu) where almost all the other entrees were priced at between $8 and $16. But the Chorizo Loco was a large enough plate to be sufficient as a main course. This restaurant is family owned and staffed and the service was excellent and quite friendly. Our only concern is that we were here on a Saturday evening and between 6 and 7 PM only 2 tables were occupied. By all rights, Tomatellos ought to be busier. (BTW, the place was originally called Tomatillos, but when the Tello family took it over they modified the name by changing the i in Tomatillos to an e.) We think this little restaurant in the quaint village of Hopewell deserves a try. We enjoyed it and I'm sure we'll be back since we're anxious to try some of the other menu itemsMore
