We had been wanted to try this place previously but made reservations after Chef Nguyen won Best Chef Midwest. We ordered several appetizers, entrees and two desserts - everything was delicious. Several of the items we had never seen before such as the water fern cakes (and while they look unusual they were amazing). Each of the cocktails were very tasty and worked well with our meal. There is a reason there was a line of patrons waiting for them to open at 4pm on a Saturday.

My colleagues and I swung by on a Wednesday night (which happened to be the same week of Hai Hai earning the James Beard award). The place was packed, and the staff still worked their magic. Order the ribs appetizer, the meat fell right off of the bone. I ordered the Mi Quong for my main dish, and while my appetite was fulfilled… the healthy ingredients selected for each plate left me full but not uncomfortable in my own pants. Balance of sweet/spicy and a variety of textures, which my pallete thoroughly appreciated!

We have recently taken to trying out new restaurants after physical therapy sessions. I looked up Hai Hai and we were in the mood for something Asian, so off we went. At 4:30 PM there were already quite a few people there. Which makes sense because these folks seem adept at mixology. My partner order a cocktail with rye whiskey, Lopsang souchang tea, smoked tea syrup and orange. This unlikely sounding mixture was seductively delicious.I enjoyed an apple, pear and pho spiced shrub that was beautifully refreshing. We began to think we were on to something.
We tried a charred sweet potato starter, chunks of sweet potato deep fried to a crunchy char and decorated with dots of a sauce that is a mix of galanga and lime leaf, thin sliced Fresno peppers, leaves of Thai basil, as I recall. This was stunningly good for both taste and texture.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a vegan version of a Vietnamese pancake. Usually made with shrimp and pork, this one was made with sliced shiitake mushrooms and onion. This was delicious. I decided to add in a vegan spring roll which was equally good. It had the usual ingredients but also a clever addition of crunch from a rolled up fried egg roll wrapper.
This is a small place with relatively few tables. We gathered that if you want to sit at a table rather than the bar, reservations will be necessary and tables are not seated before 5 PM because that is when the waitstaff arrive. The background music was a little more intense than we like, but it didn’t impair our conversation. I was grateful for the ramp in the entry as I must now walk with a walker.
Service was prompt and friendly and we had an extended pleasant conversation with the bartender. We will definitely be back, possibly within the month.

I ordered the Hanoi Sticky Rice bowl. What I got was a bowl full of rice that had sat for so long that the entire mass of rice could be lifted out of the bowl with my fork. The toppings were mostly good, but sparse… except for the Chinese sausage. It was so hard and chewy that it felt like it had gotten stuck in a shipping container off the west coast for a year or two. Definitely in the top 10 worst meals I’ve ever had. The service started off really good, but as soon as we got our food, we lost contact. I had to wave my arms at the hostess across the restaurant in order to resolve our bill. And then, to top it off, I am OBLIGATED to pay a 20% tip, incorporated into my food costs. If you want me to tip 20%, then provide food and service representative of it. One of the poorest restaurant experiences ever in the Twin Cities.

We went here with friends and the waitress explained that they bring dishes out as they are ready, not when the whole table is ready. So, per her suggestion we would order a dish (or two), and when it arrived order the next, sharing all the plates among the four of us. What a great way to experience many of the interesting and delicious options this "Asian Street Food" restaurant has to offer. Their signature drinks were also a hit with the table. My wife, who is usually a one drink person even ordered a second (forcing me to abstain, so I could drive, dammit). The atmosphere makes you feel like you are in a street cafe in Hanoi.

Excellent high energy venue. Our waiter explained the ordering process well and we ordered
Dish-by-dish knowing we would share. Only downside was that the bar was extremely busy. We ended up with two or the orders getting there before our drinks. We loved the beef laab salad. The spicy coconut shrimp toast was pretty bland.

Very disappointed as this did not live up to its press. The food was nothing special and each dish we had was heavy on the oil and most items were deep fried. No idea how this restaurant won a James Beard award. We headed to Spoon & Stable once the Vietnamese crepe arrived at the table.

This restaurant had been on my list for quite awhile. I recruited my dad & son to join me for dinner here one week night in October. Cute place! Love the decor. Large outdoor patio space. For starters we tried the spring rolls & the shrimp toast. The spring rolls had an interesting crunch with the addition of a type of bread crisp wrapped in the roll. We all liked it! Shrimp toast was good, nothing special.
For our mains we had: Tumeric & dill fish, beef rendang & the shrimp curry bird’s nest. The dill fish was really good! Great flavors & variety. My dad liked the beef dish. My son didn’t love the shrimp curry- a bit too fishy of a taste for him. We did share the chocolate dessert with rice crips! Very good! I also liked my drinks- they are known for fun creations- agree on this one!

This is a fantastic restaurant. Really fun atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. The food is unique and delicious and tbere are a lot of great options for vegetarians. I highly recommend the tofu and brussel sprouts. They also have a diverse cocktail menu.

$20 cancellation fee ($10 per guest) I wish I could say that the food is great (as the menu looks good), but found out there is a $10 cancellation fee per guest if you cancel within 24 hours. I will inform all my friends of this side note as things crop up and sometimes you can’t make it. First time I’ve come across a restaurant that does this here in the cities.

I found this by accident, lucky accident, and I thought it was one of the best Thai restaurants I have found, in a city filled with Thai restaurants. Very artful menu, unusual and imaginative, nice outdoor patio, and great drinks. They offer a Manhattan with a bourbon that is steeped in tea. Very unusual and delicious

We went with 2 friends and enjoyed great food and good conversation. However, we felt the COVID-19 precautions were not nearly as good as other places we’ve been. The place felt crowded and separation was minimal. Our server wore their mask with their nose exposed. No patrons wore masks when the server was at the tables despite the rules asking them to do that. Until these issues are fixed will not return.

After a bit of delay getting our cocktails, our server, Jake, was superb! He was affable, truly knowledgeable about food and drink and just a pleasure to be taken care of by. Every dish we ordered deserved raves. I don't think you could go wrong. Perhaps the shrimp was a little pedestrian, but still tasty. Next time I would order the shrimp toast. Speaking for myself, their take on the Boulevardier cocktail can't be beat. Can't wait to go back.

All the cocktails here are interesting and very different form traditional U.S. ones. We enjoyed the "A Life Aquatic" the most of the ones we tried. The Water Fern Cake is a very good and novel appetizer. Try it! And the bali chicken and ribs are very tasty, too.

There’s a reason the chef just won the James Beard Award! Excellent food, fun atmosphere. We got several appetizers, mains, and cocktails, plus dessert. Don’t miss the vegetarian crepe. My only regret is that I couldn’t order more! I’ll definitely be back.
