Lunch was excellent! The soups hit the spot and the servings were large. We watched as he cooked a few orders. The portions were large and the food looked delicious. Great to find an affordable option across the street from the hotel.
We stayed right across the street which made my husband's weekend because he loves this place. I woke up Saturday to him entering the room with bags of take out. The food is very authentic and has great flavor.
Got off work starving, I've wanted to try La Abuelita for months. My friends kept telling me to go somewhere else for a good Mexican meal, and I should have listened.
Service was kind, and pretty speedy. But while standing at the counter I noticed...the refrigerator was in horrible shape, the condiment station where my food was being prepared wasn't looking much more appetizing. I ordered two crispy tacos and chips and salsa. Got home opened the container of salsa, that came out of that same fridge, dipped a chip and lord the salsa was so spoiled, I spit my bite out into a napkin. The taco's though the shells were great, they had boiled plain strips of chicken no seasoning, no flavor, I thought sour cream or something would be in my to go bag, but no sauces or cream, so I thought ok.. I'll add whatever I got in my fridge. Remember I just worked a 12 hour shift, I was desperate. So out came the blue cheese. I finished one taco, but discarded the other, chips, and salsa. If only I would have listened. I would have had a happy full belly elsewhere. Sorry La Abuelita, but you definitely have some tightening up to do.More
My husband and I stopped by based on the reviews and were not disappointed - the food is delicious and the owner lovely to speak with. True, authentic food - do try the tilapia frito - a winner. Very nice rice and beans.
Tucked into a little plaza on Coastal highway in Ocean City is the gem called La Abuelita. It is a small, unassuming storefront with a few tables and a friendly owner waiting at the counter while you make your choice from the well-rounded and interesting...menu. There are no bad choices. Everything is fantastic, but I would recommend a dish which includes both the home made beans and the rice if you are a first-timer, as they shouldn't be missed. The dishes are fresh and flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and plentiful, and heat up beautifully if you take them to go. If you are a fan of the super spicy, try the hot peppers as a side...they're killer. We never leave Ocean City without our La Abuelita fix!More
I am very picky and critical about my Mexican food after being raised in Southern Arizona, so I didn't expect to come to Ocean City and find an authentic Baja/Sonoran style Mexican meal.
The combination plate with a cheese enchilada was terrific. The corn tortilla...held together better than any other enchilada I've had out East. The shredded beef taco was also great and authentic. Beans and rice came on the side, as well for just over $10.
The chips and salsa were fresh, although the salsa was as hot as any I've had in a restaurant. Very good, but extremely hot.More
