First visit yesterday on the recommendation of friends. And it was very good indeed. Late booking so could only get a table at 2.30pm and was worried some roasts would have run out/be stale. But not a bit of it; all very fresh, choice of chicken, beef and pork with home made Yorkshires and good selection of veg. Also a... More

An excellent lunch in a lovely atmosphere with very good service. Had the whitebait to start, then liver and bacon as a main and rhubard pavlova as dessert. All delicious. Cost inc wine £30/head... excelllent value. Would recommend. Note: you need to book at weekends... v popular

Though the location of this pub is nice, first impressions are nothing special. It's a very old building with low ceilings and several adjoining rooms quite simple/plain decor. But the menu is very nice and the staff friendly. It's a French run pub with an interesting menu. Good range and slightly fancy food. My friends had game pie whilst my... More

Expecting great things as a return visit after 5 years and especially as the car park was busy so a popular country pub but the initial excitement was rapidly removed by the lack of any warmth or charm from the maître’d. Had it been anywhere else and I’d not driven 30 minutes to get there I would have walked straight... More

I hadn't been to The Highwayman for years but my brother and his wife invited my husband and I for lunch. We had the 'set price' menu which proved to be excellent with a varied choice of dishes. The restaurant was busy for Tuesday lunchtime but the staff were friendly and efficient. We will definitely be returning.

Description
The Highwayman Inn is located in a beautiful hamlet near Checkendon, on the Berkshire, Oxfordshire border, only an hour from London and 20 minutes from Reading and Henley on Thames. The pub dates back to the 16th century and still retains some of its original characteristics. Our aim is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy our award winning food. We are committed to using local suppliers and produce with above all an eye for quality. If things go wrong or are not to your taste then please talk to us. We are genuine people that work really hard and care about what we do. We are always happy to listen to comments that will help us to improve our business and product. We want you to have an experience that is what you wanted and expected. It is disappointing enough to know that we have not given the best of ourselves but to read it later on the internet when it could have been dealt with at the time is frustrating and upsetting.Whether in my establishment or any other talk to the staff treat them with respect and they will work that much harder for you.
