Recently we were invited to a celebration catered by these folks and despite their efforts to please we weren’t impressed with the food. Margaritas were very average and not noteworthy. Chips and guacamole can tell you something about a place and this screamed bland. More...like creamy avocado spread....could’ve used even some red pepper to give it flavor. Salsa was fresh but also lacked direction despite showing some heat. Mains included Mexican chicken wings, which were dried out but flavorful, beef like a flank steak which was a bit tough for me but enjoyed by most. It had just a few red pepper slices and was to be placed on tacos..... also there’s was a chicken dish which had a few more veggies mixed on and a better fuller Mexican flavor. Potatoes weren’t my cup of tea, and the beans and rice were beans and rice...... Perhaps it may be spicier and better in the restaurant?More

We met our daughter and 4 year old grandson at Sergio's Place for dinner. It is a warm, friendly neighborhood restaurant. Our grandson loved all the cute decorations inside. The walls are full of Mexican art, lots of figurines and, our grandson's favorite, the colored...lights all over. The food was very good. Guacamole and chips were delicious, and they kept re-filling our bowl of chips. The enchiladas mole were delicious and the fish tacos were fresh tasting and very good. We were not crazy about the fried ice cream for dessert but it is a popular dessert. This is a very reasonably priced restaurant, good for families and casual dining. Easy street parkingMore

Sergio's Place has become very popular in this area. The food is really good and the margaritas are very good, as well. The prices are quite reasonable. The staff was efficient and friendly. We ordered a tostado and two shrimp tacos and it was the...right amount of food, as they are ample portionsMore

I love Mexican food and in Sergio's I found wonderful food and atmosphere. The prices are right and the margaritas delicious. Sergio is very nice and come to your table to talk to you. You feel like at home. Also once a month he has...live music with a very good Latino band. We live in Michigan but every time we go to Chicago we stop by. It is worth believe me!!More

Truly enjoyed a delicious dinner and will be returning soon. Interesting decor; Portions were generous, prices were fair, waitress was courteous and friendly (despite the crabby owner who felt the need to criticize her in front of us for being a few minutes late; don't...you hate that?). Closed Mondays and I think they break for an hour 3-4pm) between lunch and dinner service.More

My 97-year-old mother-in-law was in the hospital down the road (Gottlieb) over the holidays and, after spending the day with her, we popped into Sergio's on a wing and a prayer. It was absolutely delightful. Everyone was welcoming, the atmosphere was energetic, the decor got...us into an upbeat mood, and the food was great. What a wonderful way to neutralize a trying day at the hospital. P.S. Mom-in-law is A-OK!!!More

Based on the food and the reasonable prices, I would have probably given this five stars with pleasure. But the noise level was a serious negative for our experience. The low, flat, hard-surfaced ceiling, and hard-surfaced walls parallel to each other make for noises bouncing...around the room with nothing to soften them. There were only two other families in the restaurant when we were there, but it sounded like a ball game, and my wife and I found it hard to talk. This is a shame because in this area, near Oak Park and River Forest, there is room for a good quality and reasonably priced Mexican restaurant, and this could be it. They offer a range of choices in hotness of sauces; I had the spiciest - the habanera sauce - and it was fierce, but still did not overwhelm the other flavors. The beef was well prepared, as was the chicken. And the chicken soup that I had was quite extraordinary, filled with chicken and a rich broth, and vegetables and even slices of apple! A very good experience that could be much better if they can find a way to dampen the noise level.More

Sergio's is a festive Mexican restaurant in an unassuming location on North Avenue. The staff and service can't be beat and the food is out of this world. The cheese they use for quesadillas is mouthwatering. I have been there several times at different times...of day and it is always reliable. They don't make blended frozen drinks but the margaritas are excellent. I can't wait to go back!More

If you're an ex-city person who moved the 'burbs and longs for the pre-kids days of sipping margs at The Twisted Lizard in Lincoln Park, rejoice. Sergio's is owned by the same guy-- and the food is awesome. I visited with my husband, 4-year-old and...baby last year, and it's become high on the list of places we recommend when people move to our neighborhood. For those of you who can't quite justify the more "upscale" Mexican restaurants in Oak Park-- but don't want fast food-- this warm, casual, family-friendly spot is perfect. We had the fajitas and the al pastor tacos (amazing!). Great kids' options. They even had a gluten-free beer for those of us who stick to the corn tortillas:) The Day of the Dead decor is fun and colorful, but it did require us calming down our daughter, who was a little scared of the "spooky guys." Don't miss out on this place! Haven't tried their brunch yet, but we plan to!More

Sergio’s Place, what an unexpected delight. A group of 14 of us dropped in on a Sunday evening. We did call ahead. At first we said we had nine, then called back to say it would be twelve. And then two extras showed up. They...accommodated us and even turned down the music when we requested it. (Some of us are old and hard of hearing.) Unlike many places they agreed to give us separate checks and even more rare they did not add on an automatic tip! I’m sure we put some stress on the kitchen which is probably the reason we didn’t see Sergio himself until we had all been served. I heard nothing but compliments up and down the table on the food. I had the Carne Asada and it was outstanding. The steak was tender and full of flavor. We will definitely be back.More

My girlfriend and I were on our way to the Onion Roll across the street and saw the big Sunday Brunch sign at Sergio's so decided to try it out. What a meal! And for just $10. The brunch was a mix of Mexican and...gringo breakfast items. The Mexican items included scrambled eggs in salsa roja, rice and beans, and chilaquiles in salsa verde (and more). It was all perfectly seasoned with a bit of a kick. Gringo items included bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs with ham and cheese, and cinnamon raisin bread French toast (and more). When they ran out of French toast in the warmer we asked if they would be making more. They did - and brought a plate with two slices and some blueberries and whipped cream to both of us. The service was top-notch and very friendly. Sergio came by the table and talked to us for a few minutes. While the decor is what you would expect in a Mexican restaurant, it isn't just stuff randomly placed around. The whole place gives the sense of a skilled decorator selecting and placing each object on the wall. It's a joy just to sit there and look around. A highlight is the little altar with memorabilia next to the bar. It includes such things as a photo of Sergio with Fidel Castro (20 years ago) and a signed picture of the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders. We will definitely be going back for brunch and want to try them out for dinner as well.More

The Tacos al pastor had a good authentic and marinated flavor. The fish tacos were moist with a nice creamy slaw. The rice and black beans fill up the plate, but paled to the flavors of the tacos. Good guacamole and a thin salsa. Prices...are pretty average. The restaurant has nice decor, with Frida Kahlo painting and Day of The Dead-type pieces, authentic to various parts of Mexico. Its a nice change from the Corona signs you usually see at other places.'' Friendly staff. I will definitely check it on a Sunday morning soon, since their Mexican brunch menu looks awesome.More

Although Sergio's has a Chicago address, it's just across the Oak Park border, and I suspect that's where many of its customers will come from. It's warm and welcoming, now with a full bar, and has excellent food. We were doing carry-out and wildly over-ordered...for four, simply because we wanted to try so many things. We had two kinds of sopes, the guacamole, the chicken wings, the totopos (think nachos), the tacos al pastor, the carne asada, and the chicken tamales. Everything was delicious, but the highlights were the wings, the tacos, the carne asada, and the tamales. Even though Chicago has some excellent tortilla factories, and warm fresh tortillas are available in almost every grocery store as a result, there's nothing that can compare to handmade tortillas, freshly prepared. Sergio's makes their own tortillas, and that elevates the meal a whole notch above many of Chicago's excellent Mexican restaurants. A final note. This is not a taco joint. If you think of Mexican food as cheap street food to help sober you after a night of partying you may be surprised to see that most of the food comes as full dinners, typically in the $10-$15 price range. Still perfectly reasonable, especially at this quality, but not fast food prices either. We will be back. Often.More

This place opened about a month ago here in Galewood (just north of Oak Park). It has bright Mexican decor with a small bar in the corner (although they don't yet have their liquor license) and a dozen or so tables. The waitress was very...friendly, helpful with our choices, and attentive. A gentleman came around twice--the owner I presume--to ask how we liked things. We ordered tacos al pastor (pork with pineapple and a pretty spicy sauce) which my stepson LOVED, and enchiladas with mole sauce, which was excellent with a mild kick, smoky and hearty with that hint of cocoa. Both came with a nice side of flavorful rice and black beans. The food was really good. Each dish as of this writing was $14, which is about the price of most entrees on the menu, i.e., somewhere between $12 and $18. They also had soups and some interesting looking appetizers. Next time I'll likely try the fish tacos. For right now they are BYOB, although once the get the liquor license I imagine that will cease. You really should try this place. The food is really good!More
