This small place on Harlem, just north of Touhy Ave., is an institution in the neighborhood. It isn't much in terms of ambience. It is a late 60s/early 70s diner, that hasn't changed since then (so it appears)- formica-topped tables and all. But, you don't...go for the decor. Nick's truly has one of the best gyros sandwiches in the Chicagoland area, if not the best, in a city that is awash in gyros stands. It's certainly the best I have had. The reason they are the best (as I heard from a local neighborhood historian) is that they construct their own gyros meat. It is not pre-packaged from a factory. I haven't confirmed that exactly, but you can clearly tell there is a difference. The fries you get as a side are good, but standard fare. If I have a hankering for a gyros, I will drive across the whole city to get one from Nick's. I can't really speak to their other items on the menu, because I only get the gyros with fries. 'Nuff said.More
