Like pizza parlors and hot dog stands and steakhouses and barbecue joints, shrimp houses are growing by leaps and bounds in the Chicago area. How do you get fresh caught jumbo shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico to Chicago's North Side? Snappy's Shrimp House has the answer. For over 10 years, the little restaurant at 1901 West Irving Park Road, at Wolcott, east of Graceland Cemetery, one block east of Irving Park and Damen, in the Ravenswood/North Center neighborhood, east of Lincoln Avenue, west of Ashland, Snappy's has been known for its Gulf seafood and serving fresh fish and chicken by the pound. It is also noted for its hushpuppies with honey butter. As a shrimp lover who became addicted while vacationing in Florida in the 1950s, I have spent the last several years searching the Chicago area for outstanding shrimp houses. Snappy's is underrated and unappreciated. You won't find shrimp any better anywhere else. My wife and I always order a two pounds of jumbo fried shrimp with hushpuppies and potato pancakes with sour cream or apple sauce. And a fish filet sandwich and a BBQ chicken sandwich on Kaiser rolls are musts. Shrimp cocktail, too. Sea scallops and catfish and chicken wings also are on the menu. I can't get over how good Gulf shrimp tastes in Chicago, especially at Snappy's.

we were introduced to snappy's by our son and his wife. it is a small, spotlessly clean rest. that serves all types of seafood for dine in or carryout. all the items we ordered were delightfull, even though they were deep fried nothing was greasy or soggy.

Not just fried stuff! They have a couple other options. Hush puppies with honey butter are awesome. The fish and shrimp were great as well. Nothing fancy here with the digs or the price! Just good food fast!

I've stopped in after working late to grab a quick bite. I tried the fish chips several times and they are consistently good. Like I titled my review I've only had the fish chips being $8.00 a lb with a sauce of your choice it was a great deal. I'm trying the shrimp this week since the chips have made the cut with me. 3 stars is probally low but will bump it up after I have the shrimp. Fast friendly service.

We saw Snappy's on the "Chicago's Best" TV program and decided to give it a try. It's a small place with seating limited to a table for 3 and a half-dozen or so seats at a counter by the window (apparently they do mostly take-out) but on the day we went there, we were able to get a place to sit.
We had the shrimp dinner and the scallops dinner, (you can order them in 1/4 lb. increments) with clam strips as a side dish. The dinners included fries, cole slaw or potato salad, and a canned soft drink. Cocktail sauce or tartar sauce are offered with the meals.
The shrimp and scallops were both cooked well and very tasty. Fries were above average; the cole slaw is creamy-style and also above average. The clam strips were a bit overdone and included many small pieces that seemed to be just breading. Neither Coke nor Pepsi soft drink brands are available; instead they offer RC cola, Dr. Pepper and 7-UP brands.
The shrimp and scallops were cooked to order so if they are busy it could be several minutes until your order is ready. Since they weren't too busy at the time of day we went (1:30 PM) we had just a short (under 5 minutes) wait for our food.
Snappy's is easy to get to via the Brown Line "L" -- it is 1 block west of the Irving Park stop.
It's worth a visit, but if you plan to eat there at a busy hour you may not get a seat.

Sorry Goose. But for me, Snappy's has taken the title as the best fried shrimp in town. First, the shrimp are always fresh, plump moist and never over cooked. They proudly advertise that they use wild caught shrimp from the US Gulf. Secondly, the batter is light with a nice crunch and not over seasoned so the delicious taste of the shrimp comes through, making it all about the shrimp.
I've been buying shrimp from Snappy's for several years and their product is consistent and is fried with no tail. I haven't tried their other products because their shrimp is soooo good. I did not give five stars because I have not tried other things on their menu and I am not a fan of their sauces. I try to always have a jar of Farmer's Horseradish in the fridge so that I can convert their sauce to my liking.
But judging solely on the shrimp I give Snappy's 5 STARS.
