We were four adults on a Saturday night. The menu is not huge but we found a number of dishes that sounded appealing. The Caesar salad was big enough to share and we did so. One had raw oysters to start ($5 each!) , another...had the octopus tentacle. We each ordered a main course and enjoyed it without sharing. We then shared an order of beignets for dessert; there were 6 of them dusted with powdered sugar and served with 2 small crocks of warm sauce, caramel and chocolate. We shared these as well and they were a hit. All the food was high quality, attractively plated and well-prepared. Dinner for the four of us with only 2 cocktails and no other alcohol came to $325 with tax but before tip. They add a 3% surcharge for employee health benefits or something. Service was cordial and competent. The noise level in the dining room is high even if it's not completely full. There are some outside sidewalk tables along Wells St as well if the weather cooperates. They do not offer valet parking but metered street parking within a couple blocks was easy to find.More

Our party of four enjoyed our starting cocktails but thought that our appetizers and entrees were just OK. Desserts were gooey messes. Service is very good and the atmosphere looks pleasant but noise levels from other tables is very annoying, Prices are very high for...the offering. None of us plan to return.More

Great seafood and great atmosphere. Nice variety of appetizers and entrees. Highly recommend the seafood cavatelli, although everyone in our group loved their food as well.

After returning from our trip to Louisiana's River Road from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, my wife and I couldn't wait to visit some of the Cajun restaurants in Chicago. We started at GT Fish & Oyster, an oyster bar and seafood eatery opened in...2011 by chef Giuseppe Tentori and the celebrated Boka Restaurant Group. Located at 531 North Wells Street, at Grand, in the River North neighborhood, it is open from 5 to 9 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 5 to 10 on Friday and Saturday. We started with shrimp cocktail, shrimp bruschetta with avocado, toasted pistachio, grapefruit and cilantro, clam chowder with bacon and house-made oyster crackers and Caesar salad with white anchovy, brioche croutons, tomato and Caesar dressing. For an entree, my wife chose rainbow trout with petite potatoes, cipollini and trout roe buerre blanc. I opted for Mediterranean Branzino with artichoke, pommes puree and manila clams. I was introduced to Branzino in Florida a few years ago and I've been a fan of this tender and meaty and delicious sea bass ever since. For dessert, we shared large portions of key lime pie and salted caramel panna cotta with vanilla caramel glaze, prairie orchard apples and apple cider granita. In a relative short period of time, GT Fish & Oyster has emerged as one of the leading restaurants in Chicago.More

We enjoyed our first visit to GT. We were there a bit early for our reservation but were cheerfully seated right away—service was excellent generally. One person had fish tacos which were good but very salty; it was a heavy hand with a sort of...crunchy element in them, we thought. The fish and chips plate was superb , with very fresh fish and light batter. Didn’t explore the menu very far, hope to another time.More

It had been a couple of years (at least!) since we’d been to GT Fish and Oyster, and this visit reminded us it should be in our rotation of Chicago restaurants more often. We had family visiting; they like seafood. That made GT Fish and...Oyster a logical option. The location, in River North, is fine—convenient, even, if you’re staying in the Loop or off the Mag Mile, and excellent for public transit access. There’s plenty of street parking in the area. The restaurant has modern decor and nice design; given that our family members were a bit older and we wanted to have good conversation with them, we really appreciated that the restaurant wasn’t deafeningly loud, as many establishments can be. It was easy to hear one another, even as the restaurant was busy and had a good vibe. Don’t go here if you’re not a seafood lover, as the name suggests. The menu is 90% seafood. If you are a seafood lover, you’re going to find something to like! There’s an extensive raw menu; we had a dozen oysters, all excellent, and some crab (the crab was overpriced for the size of the portion, but tasted good). We appreciated that the oysters were shucked correctly and that there was a clear menu stating from where they came and previewing the flavors. Our tray featured six varieties, and they were all quite different, which made it fun. The list of entrees was manageable. Swordfish really impressed: it was perfectly cooked, and the accompanying onions and vegetables were sweet and a nice pair; the sauce work was also great. Halibut disappointed; the fish itself was under seasoned and bland. A seafood pasta fell in the middle; the seafood within it was nice, but seemed almost a distraction to the pasta with basil sauce. Nice wine list, including some lovely crisp whites to pair with raw seafood. Service was attentive and pleasant. It’s not a cheap meal, but we left feeling like we’d gotten a nice experience for the price paid.More

We celebrated a special Birthday dinner at GT Fish & Oyster Bar last night. The setting is trendy, quiet and good for a couples night out. I would agree with many reviewers the food is good and won't disappoint. A couple of minuses would be...the (1) Prices, (2) Limited Menu and (3) Spotty Service. We started out with shared appetizers Tuna Poke & Octopus. Both were solid plates clean fresh tastes - flavorful. But for the premium price - I would have anticipate a "je ne sais quoi" punch! It wasn't at that level so while good - perhaps a tad overpriced. We struggled a bit with selecting main courses. We viewed the menu on-line and assumed their would be a couple of specials - alas, what you see is what you get! While there is a good selection if you want to straddle eating in the bar vs restaurant area - the dining room menu left us a little wanting. Certainly something for everyone even if you are not a diehard seafood fan. We settled on the Seared Scallops and Whole Roasted Steelhead Trout. The Steelhead Trout was amazing in both presentation and flavor! It is a must have - I will be trying to recreate that in my kitchen for months to come! The Seared Scallops were okay - but you can get similiar quality and style at so many seafood restaurants. The Carrot Cake Dessert was really good! Light and flavorful. On balance GT Fish and Oyster Bar is solid choice if you are looking for a seafood option in Chicago. It has enough pluses to outweigh the minuses on the positive side. But be forewarned it's slightly overpriced IMO. I would have really liked to try the raw bar but at $155 for the tower it was out of reach and as I scanned the menu, I couldn't find a reasonable entry point to go for the raw oysters I love, shrimp or smoked fish options. Service was okay (we had a new waiter - but everyone has to have a start somewhere.... the hostess's cold welcome and walk to the table really skewed my wife's perception of things to follow, which were hard to overcome. Not sure if we will be back anytime soon... But if you are in Chicago looking for seafood please consider it. If someone else has invited you and is picking up the tab - don't hesitate to join in!More

Amazing food and service! Cheers to this establishment and GM Jasmine Perales, And in particular Bryan who went above and beyond to give great service. Prior to coming, I spoke to GM Perales who generously offered to make the Birthday weekend special for my wife...and group. We arrived on a really busy Valentines evening and was a bit concerned with the wait as my young adult kids had another venue to visit this All Star Weekend. Cue to Brian who basically took over from very pleasant Ethan and assured us we would enjoy great food, service and be on time. Sure enough as soon as we were seated, treats started coming over with a round of Champaign and nice spring bruchetta appetizer on the house. The meals were exquisite, the winner being the scallops in a cauliflower puré and zucchini. The gnocchi was a close second. Just as we thought the meal couldn’t get better, we got the desserts that literally “takes the cake” here!! Amongst the chocolate cake, cheesecake and carrot cake (all given with homemade sorbet), the carrot cake really took the cake- carrot cake on top of whipped cream cheese icing with vanilla sorbet ice cream. BTW Bryan very generously paid for one of our desserts which is really rare and is a sign of an exceptional restaurant and staff when this is done (we tipped as if everything was included). So delicious were the desserts , they should win an award!! Would highly recommend coming here for the food, service, and especially the deserts!!! My complements to GM Perales and her staff. She came around frequently to check on us. GM Jasmine and Bryan YOU ROCK!!!More
