We ended up at Red Grouper Tavern because the place we planned to go was packed and we didn’t want to wait. When we arrived the host saw us coming and actually opened the door for us. This place was also busy but there were a couple tables available and we got to choose. The one we chose needed cleaning and the host did it himself (I wish I had asked his name). We were seated and in a short time our waitress, Kathleen came over, she was very pleasant an personable. Got drinks ordered while we looked over the menu. Hadn’t planned on a full meal but we ordered a spaghetti and meatballs as well as a chicken parmigiana. Both came with a salad and garlic bread for the price of $15 each. When they arrived the portion was large. She checked on us frequently but allowed us to enjoy our meal. Dinners along with one wine, one beer and tip was a reasonable $54 plus leftovers over to take. While the food was plentiful and good, the service was outstanding! The host, our waitress as well as other wait staff that we witnessed, were caring and considerate. Everyone was pitching in to help the customer experience by clearing and cleaning tables, whatever needed to be done and even inquiring how meals were and if anyone needed or wanted something else. It has been so long since I’ve been to an establishment that actually put the customer first!! Good job guys, keep it up!! Whoever is ready this check this place out!!!

Stumbled on the Red Grouper Tavern looking for a place to eat near our hotel. Our expectations were modest given the circumstances, but they really delivered. The service was excellent and friendly and our grouper dinners were very well prepared and flavorful. My only issue was being charged 50 cents extra for a glass to go with my bottle of beer (beer listed as $4.50 on the menu showed up as "beer, glass" for $5.00 on bill). I can remember when you could get a glass FULL of beer for 50 cents, haha.

So happy you had a good experience. The price must have been increased in our POS system but incorrect on our menu. The way the bottle of beer showed on your receipt "beer, glass" only means that our bartender gives the server a beer and a glass (some guests do not want a glass) Wish we knew this while you were there and we could have corrected it. Thanks for stopping and giving us a nice review.

The four of us had dinner this evening at Red Grouper and the dining experience was excellent. Melanie greeted us as soon as we walked in and was professional, attentive, and even joined in some of our light-hearted bantering which made for an even more enjoyable time. It was happy hour, with $1 off drinks. No skimping on the pour portion. Three of us had the lobster special (offered Tuesdays, with 2 sides for only $20!!!) and we were stuffed. Fourth person had the fried shrimp basket with fries and coleslaw. Bountiful serving of hot, tasty, lightly battered shrimp. YUM!! Don’t forget the garlic bread. Another YUM!! We agreed we will definitely be back.!! Red Grouper is a family owned and run business. I have no connection to this business/family, but love to support locally owned businesses who provide excellent service to their community. Please give Red Grouper a try. Thank you All

First appearance inside of restaurant was good. Nice list of specials. Bisque (cup $6) was extremely salty. Added the entire packet of soup crackers to it, to try to cut the salt taste, but it just wasn’t enough. Beer battered cod ($18 - with fries & coleslaw) looked very good & server claimed it was their most popular item. 3 nice sized pieces with a golden brown crust, unfortunately it was still a bit doughy inside. One and a half of my cod pieces had an inedible, tough section the entire length and about half the width. When brought to the server’s attention, they tried to say it was the skin (no fish skin is that tough) and flaked the small amount of meat away from it, commenting how it flaked away (like that made it acceptable). The coleslaw was plain, dry shredded cabbage with a bit of carrot & might have been good IF it had even a drop of sauce. Fries were less than appealing & limp. To end it all, the bill came with all items at full price. Nothing credited for the HALF of my dinner that couldn’t be eaten. Probably a nice place for a beer, but EAT somewhere else.

If you're happy with a very good meal, without the glitz and glammer, the Red Grouper is for you. I came to the restaurant solo last night and sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and also rather knowledgeable about food, It was Saturday night and I could see that my meal wouldn't be coming too quickly. I was ok with that and enjoyed the conversations I had with my fellow diners at the bar. The bartender, I believe his name is Michael, told me I would be wise to get my salad first, as the kitchen was quite busy. I agreed and had a very crip, fresh garden salad with an acceptable blue cheese dressing. It did take longer than normal for my meal to arrive but when it did, I was rewarded with a very nicely cooked piece of grouper. The baked potato that accompanied it was also quite nicely done. I finished with a generous slice of Key Lime pie. Not the best I have ever had but better than most. The final price was around 40 dollars and I was quite happy to pay it. I will be back. Not sure who wrote the previous reviews but we didn't have the same experience as they did. Maybe the servers wrote them...I don't know. But I digress. They apparently love the idea of having seafood on the menu, they just can't seem to make it happen. The magic wand just didn't work. My wife orders the grouper reuben and the server says they don't have it. Mind you the restaurant is completely empty when we arrive with the exception of a few souls at the bar. So she peruses the menu and decides on the lobster. Server states that it isn't coming up on his handheld gadget and he needs to check with the kitchen to see if its available. Now, mind you that all of the above is on the menu. It hasn't been taped over or have they said when we sat down that this and that are not available. He comes back from the kitchen and low and behold, the chef has found a lobster tail about 3 ounces in size. I suggest that my wife order something different because I do not trust the kitchen at this stage of the game here. She decides she will order it and we both order a cup of soup as appetizer. The soup was actually not bad. Could have used a tad more cream to thicken it up a bit but overall, not bad. I order the blackened grouper which came out 5 minutes or so before her lobster. Is it really to much to ask a kitchen that clearly is not busy to have your dinner come out at the same time? Her lobster finally appears and she would like it cleaned and cut. The server mentions that there is a 3 dollar charge to perform this culinary magic. She agrees not realizing how long it would take a kitchen that, did I mention earlier, is clearly not busy. 5minutes...6.....7......8....9 minutes go by before the server brings it out. By now the lobster is as dry as the sand on the beach and cold. I could go on but I'm just disappointed with this place....Heed the warnings friends. Spend your hard earned dollars elsewhere where they are appreciated.

Well, there was 6 of us and everyone was happy with their meals except for me. I asked the server for her opinion, either the scallops or lobster roll. She quickly said scallops, or so I ordered them. Everyones food came out, then mine last. They put fried shrimp in front of me. Well, of course I immediately told them I ordered scallops. Shortly there after. My scallops were given to me. They looked raw and after a tiny bite asked the server to take them back to cook more. They came back quickly, and still looked raw. There was no sear on them! When I cook them both sides have a lovely brown sear. Don't think the cooks knew how to prepare them. Needless to say they were terrible.

We've been to the Red Grouper a number of times. The fish is fresh and expertly prepared. A great place to eat! Drinks from the bar leave a lot to be desired, otherwise it would be a nice place to stop for a drink. The service has always been good with one exception when a young male server made us feel that he wanted us out ASAP. Our dinner came with the appetizers when we specifically asked them to space it out. Kept taking things away from the table when we weren't even finished. If I hadn't had previous great service there I would have not ever returned. The owners were not present that night and it was around 7:00 pm.

This place was horrible!!!!! Ordered two different things on the menu, did not have it on menu. Decided on lobster first didn’t have it then they did . Other guest were almost finished with their food before mine came out. Then charged an up charge to clean the lobster which by the way was ice cold!!!! My husband ordered blacken Groupon, horrible! The hostess came over and asked our opinion on the food we said not good and lobster was ice cold her comment was “well you ate it” nit really had to share with my friends so they can taste how cold and tuff it was! Worse restaurant in Venice I work very hard for my money. Such a waste people don’t waste your time here you will be throwing your money away. Oh and by the way went to pay and server said just hit button 1,2 or 3 confused by this had to borrow my friends glasses for this , it was for the tip 20, 25, or more. The nerve never again!!!

Inconsistent! In the past few months we have dined here 6-8 times. Before they introduced Fried Belly Clams we ordered the fried haddock. One week it was great the next overcooked and just plain awful. We are a fishing family from Gloucester, Massachusetts, and we have been in the seafood business for over 200 years. Boats, fish processing plant and restaurants. We know seafood! We were very happy when Fried Whole Belly Clams were introduced. We tried them once before introducing friends from New England to them They were good but very expensive ($36 for eleven clams). We recently brought four friends and most had clams,. They were AWFUL! One dinner was mostly chunks of batter with 5 real clams. The clams were undercooked and on the edge of going bad...My conclusion is that they have two fry cooks. One good and the other should be fired. Their are three places in Venice that serve Fried Wholebelly Clams. Burgundy Square is the best. PS: Eric was great.

Sorry to hear about your experience this time around. We appreciate your support to date with several visits. Although we typically maintain a 4.5 rating with hundreds of reviews, we recognize we will never be 100% on every detail every time. We are sincere in our efforts, but we don't always catch everything. We do table checks to take care of issues brought to our attention. Our clams are portioned by weight, not count, and our price cheaper than traditional Restaurant pricing models. Sorry about the inconsistent preparation of them. Had we known we would have fixed it. We know now and have done so. In your post you make sure to note your family's 200 year history in seafood and restaurants. Lucky guy. That means there has been millions of hours of time identifying and solving problems in the businesses, long before you were around. I would expect Perfection at those places. Imagine at the start of the seafood business, a Paul Revere type grabbed a bullhorn with 100 others so equipped Riders and went up and down the streets of every neighborhood in New England shouting your great great great grandfather's name saying his Seafood is awful!! Go to joe's! And did it every day for months. That would be the equivalent of your internet Post in today's world. You may not have been born into the situation you were had someone taken that kind of action. As an independent, I'm surprised you would do that to another restaurant, especially an independent. Most of us don't do that here. On top of that, suggest another restaurant on our page on tripadvisor, a traveler review website?! I would expect better etiquette from seafood and restaurant royalty. We are blessed to have a handful of good independent seafood restaurants in our town; each a little different, but all well run with the best intention to please our guests. I am proud to be among them. As the founder of Red Grouper Tavern I hope some of my great great grandchildren are doing that, too, whatever that looks like in their time. That would make persevering through these early, most difficult years, worth it. And thanks for your kind comments on our wonderful staff!

We are local and like to try many places. We sat at bar and had an enjoyable time except every time someone came in or out the outside door a doorbell rings. It was annoying at first and then got obnoxious as it went off 10 times in a minute as people came in and out. Needless to say we didn’t stay to try out food. I have eaten in hundreds and hundreds of restaurants and never experienced anything so annoying. Such an easy thing to fix. Good luck!

OMG Bruce I agree with you. When I'm there, I turn it off by sliding a lever but as the door is used it slides back. It is helpful when it's slow during lunch and the staff can greet a guest promptly Our food is fresh and you liked the bar so please come back and we will improve your experience.

We decided on this place as we wanted to stay local and not drive to Osprey for a 3.5 rated, overpriced fish house. Upon arrival, the place looked every bit a Tavern, but that was the extent of it. The crowd was a mix of barflies and families out to dine. The wait staff greeted us quickly and in a most friendly manner. Our cold beer was rapidly delivered, and our order was taken in turn, I had the blackened group and my brother the grilled grouper. The taste, presentation, portion and value were beyond expectations. The meal was topped with a delicious and perfectly executed key lime pie and a surprisingly good cup of coffee. This place is a real gem and a must for any local Venice dining experience. Well done!

Delicious 😋 We just moved into town, and we're staying in the area looking for a place to eat. We found the Red Grouper! We went there a few days in a week always cooked cious. We recommend the grilled Grouper, red snapper, grilled shrimp, and fish and chips. The homemade potato chips are very tasty, especially in ranch. Not to mention, the bar has some great cocktails to offer. The service is outstanding the servers are friendly and willing to answer questions. Thank you for a great experience!
