My first time in here was for my birthday. I heard about this place from my boyfriend and his daughter who found it by accident. I read the reviews on the 2 hour ride from Melbourne. To give this place just a 5 is a...travesty, as a 10 would suffice.
The ambience is welcoming, comfortable and cozy. It is an older building with maybe 10 tables ( I didn't count) the decor mildly Peruvian and the rest is the owners personality.
They opened at 5pm and we were there on time and ready to eat. We ordered the ceviche Nikkei which was outstanding. My boyfriend ordered the Mar y tierra which was a different twist to lomo saltado, the chefs take on this traditional dish was delicious, as he used pasta with huancaina sauce (Peruvian alfredo!! cool). I ordered the Andean mushroom with quinoa, you can add seafood for an additional charge-please do this!! it was outstanding, beautiful and enough food for leftovers the next day. The flavor parade on your palate is mind blowing.
The service was impeccable, Luis was gracious, knowledgeable and served us like a pro.
We will be back to see them whenever we are in the Saint Augustine area.
My only advice for the wait staff: Your guests are so excited to see you, when you open at 5pm, hold the door and escort them in, don't just unlock the door and walk away, this shows your appreciation for their patience.
As an owner of an establishment that serves the public, let me address those that gave this wonderful gem bad reviews.
First, in the hospitality industry, time is of the essence, this is a small, from scratch place, one late guest throws off the entire seating process, adding and subtracting people from your party will also affect the planned evening. The gentleman from Miami who was boisterous, rude and condescending giving this creative group of people one star should be ignored, as he did not bother to give the staff a chance to show off their culinary skills.
Second, those of you that complained about portion size and prices, this is not a "joint", this is fine dining, and all of us in this industry were severely impacted and continue to be due to the aftershocks of Covid-19, shut downs, distributors and growers unable to deliver product due to lack of transportation and the price increases that ensue. It is better to pay for fresh than something off a truck that was frozen and vacuum sealed.
Let me say thank you to the chef, the staff and the best birthday meal I have had in a very long time!!More
