We had a late dinner at Mrs. Mac's II on our first night in Key Largo. My wife had read about the pie (more on that later), and we were accompanied by our children (13, 10, 6yo). The dining room is very informal, and the...density is nice-- not wasteful, but not too cozy with other parties. Our service was friendly, informative, and really accurate. All advice on orders and portion sizes was spot on and we were regularly checked on, without being too obtrusive.
We started with the conch fritters, which had a very nice texture, though they were a little bland. In the restaurant's defense, we found these bland everywhere that we went in the keys, though everyone (including Mrs. Mac's) provided flavorful sauces. I think that they are more of a texture thing. For dinner, we had a variety of the seafood baskets, and these were generally very good. The portions were appropriate and the fish and shellfish cooked appropriately and flavorfully. The one exception was that in my combo basket, the lobster was a little chewy. Our youngest had a child's meal, which was a very generous portion.
Of course, we were very excited to try the key lime pie. The pie was my favorite in the keys. It had a much more complex flavor profile than many of the others we tried: sweet, sour, citrusy, and also a little hint of bitter that rounded everything off and made it stand out. The crust was good, and I also liked the whipped topping that they used. We later went back and just got a take-out pie. This was also excellent, and they give you a huge portion of whipped topping with it.
Overall, we enjoyed this restaurant and would go back if in the area. It was great for family dining. The menu is pretty diverse, and there are lots of non-seafood options if that is your thing (we didn't try any of those, though).More
