My wife and I chose the Griswold Inn to celebrate our 49th Anniversary. We went for lunch rather than dinner to enjoy the immediate surroundings of Essex, a quintessential New England town. The inn, itself, is fascinating; oldest continuously operating inn in the United States,...More

By tradition the male family members get together near Christmas in various locations in Southern New England with the Griswold Inn being this year's location. Restaurant was decorated beautifully for the holiday with a plus being a quartet of carolers. After drinks being served, we...More

We went with another couple to see the stores and have lunch. We enjoyed ourselves easily. Service was very attentive, asking us for our drink order after we had been seated. The drinks were full sized, not large glasses with an equally large amount of...More

The service was excellent. My chicken pot pie was as tasty as I have had in a long time. Plenty of chicken, good combination of veggies. The short ribs were good as well but served only with mashed potatoes. Another veg would have been nice....More

There were 5 in our party and we arrived around 1pm for lunch. The restaurant was mostly empty. Every step of the service was SLOW from drink orders onward. We ordered soups, quiche, salads, and sandwiches. Nothing complicated. The food was finally served after 2pm...More

We’ve loved going to the Gris over the years. It’s always an experience to stop in for a drink and listen to the music. But the food seems to be slipping in quality. While some entrees are still good and the seasonal menus are nice,...More

I had a lovely dinner in a very comfortable setting. The music from the bar added to the enjoyment. After dinner we went into the bar. The whole building is filled with interesting memorabilia. Great service and pampering by the staff.

Located in the “storybook” village of Essex mere steps from the Connecticut River, this 1776 landmark offers three distinct dining experiences. “Historic Dining” is offered in four handsome rooms - The Covered Bridge, The Gun Room, The Library and The Essex Room – where a renowned maritime art collection fills the walls. The Inn’s New England heritage and connection with the sea is apparent in the classic seasonal cuisine offered; diners may enjoy a more contemporary culinary experience in the stunning wine bar featuring tapas-style dining and an extensive selection of wines by the glass; tavern fare is offered in the atmospheric, award-winning Tap Room where lively music rings out nightly. Patio dining is an option May through October, weather permitting. Lunch and dinner served daily, Hunt Breakfast on Sunday.
