Downtown San Rafael. Open since 1918, but all rooms totally updated, albeit they’re a bit funky: each has a name to match the decor, all fully equipped (fridge, coffee maker, a/c, etc. breakfast included. Don’t miss their restaurant: it’s a foodie’s delight!
Our stay coincided with the power company shutting off all power and resulted in a challenge to survive in the dark hours without any of the services on which we are so dependent. We were unable to even try the restaurant which we had enjoyed so...much in the past visits. The room was very nice and the bed was comfortable .We slept long and well in the total darkness unable to even charge our cell phones to stay in touch with our families and friends.More
The restaurant is charming, with a retro feel in a pleasant old-style building on a quiet street and surrounded by trees. It is a delightful ambience for a quiet conversational dinner. There's live music but not offensive or intrusive, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The service is...cheerful and attentive. The menu is expansive. The food is good but not superb. The calamari fritti were excellent and the salads fair. I would not go there if you are interested in meat. We will go back there because the ambience was so pleasing and quiet, as were the restaurants of our youth, before brashness and echoing noisiness became the fashion.More
We were seated outside in perfect weather. My daughter got poblano chili (which I was envious of, but my avocad stuffed with fresh dungeness crab was awesome too. Lovely setting & food. Great service from Petra.
I had only one dinner in that restaurant but also 3 breakfasts. Especially dinner was very good. I liked the original variety of dishes on the menu alongside few traditional ones. Perogies with porcini were my dish of choice. They were nicely presented and very...tasty. All prices seamed to be very reasonable and service was timely and impeccable. The breakfasts were simple but consisted of fresh seasonal fruits, granola, baked goods, yogourts, milk, home made grainy breads, juices. Basicly everything you need for a healthy breakfast. My schedule took me away from the hotel for the remaining meals but I think it is a very nice and affordable restaurant in the region.More
My BF and I ate here last weekend. He had a stuffed poblano pepper and really didn't like it at all... was way too much goat cheese to even taste anything else (even for me and I like goat cheese). My seafood salad was quite...good but the scallops were a tad overcooked and I also had mussels which were tasty but not steaming hot and not the best I've ever had. We had to send one dessert back because they forgot to heat the apple galette below the ice cream (and truthfully, the dough used in the galette was too doughy, not at all flakey and delicate like it should be) and we had to wait for the bread pudding because another table got ours and it was very doughy and average tasting. The other disappointing thing about this place is that the menu seems to just stay the same all the time. I have to say, it wasn't as good as it used to be and I hope they fix this because the place has a lot of ambiance.More
