I was quite disappointed to learn that they don't serve food for lunch except weekends! My favorites would be the oyster bar, warm salad, skirt steak is a pleasure ~ The staff are well groomed & friendly with at most service!

Had a large group dinner so we had limited options to choose from. The staff was ok but hard to get bartenders attention. The pan seared chicken was decent. Chicken a tad dry but not bad. Whatever they seasoned with though gave some extra surprising...More

Hit or miss at this place. Over the years this place fluctuates in quality of food and service. Usually you get one or the other. Last time i was there i ordered a rib eye and it showed up with gelatinous turkey gravy poured all...More

This is the Bay Area so you can get good food at a lot of places, including here. Pretty good food! What varies every time I've eaten here (five times in the past two years) is the service. It's all over the map, from perfunctory,...More

We had a large group for cocktails and passarounds in a private room. It is definitely a lively place, and still quite popular. As a bar, therefore, it is okay. However, the food our group had was mediocre. Service was variable, with some waiters reasonably...More

Food was excellent. We have eaten here many times over many years, whenever we are in town. The seafood is terrific. Service and ambiance have deteriorated a bit over time, but the food remains stellar. Prices are average for this kind of food and are...More

We sat a a bar table right in front of the hostess. She and the rest of the staff ignored us. They charged us for food we didn't get. Every time someone served us it was someone new and they said "I'll tell the bartender"....More

A few years back, this restaurant was real hot spot in downtown San Mateo. It has losted much of its luster. We dined here a couple of years ago when it was in decline. The appetizer was okay and the main entrees was tasteless. We...More

I like Kingfish. I really do. I want so badly to LOVE Kingfish, but it just doesn't rise to that level - at least not consistently. We've gone there later night and sat downstairs and I think by then when things have died down it's...More

Description
Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live music line-up, cozy booths, and private dining rooms that would make even the French Quarter jealous. "...to walk into Kingfish is, to walk into someone's dream.", is how acclaimed SF Chronicle food editor, Michael Bauer, referred to the decor at Kingfish. Ownership takes great pride in the fact that they have one of the largest collections of authentic, Southern-Lousiana folk art in the country, to which they are always adding. The food at Kingfish is American and gives almost every palette a reason to crave. There is a passion that emanates directly from the owners, to serve only the freshest seafood possible. The steaks that are served are some of the best and tastiest you can find in the world. The ability to give each guest exactly what they crave and desire has been an increasing goal of Kingfish in recent years.
