Mitla Cafe is one of the Inland Empire's most historic eateries for two entirely different reasons. First, it is arguably the oldest IE Mexican restaurant - starting as a classic on Route 66. Second, its tacos were the inspiration for Taco Bell (cf. TACO USA by G. Arellano). History alone is a good enough reason to do the Mitla Pilgrimage.... More

Met Steve, the owner, a real cool guy. It was suggested I try the chile relleno. It is the best I've EVER tasted. The portions were large & I was unable to finish. After dinner, I went to the kitchen to praise the cooks for the meal. Expecting to see a big staff, I was pleasantly surprised by 2 sweet... More

While staying at the Wigwam Village #7 - a true 66 classic - we decided to find some good Mexican food. We were pointed in the direction of Mitla, and we couldn't have made a better selection. A tiny cafe that has been on this corner since the 1930s, this place exudes charm and character. To make it even better,... More

We walked into the restaurant and the waitress saw that my husband had a cap with a lot of Route 66 buttons. She came right over to him and gave him one from the restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. I told the waitress that someday I may write a book about our Route 66 trip... More

They are family to me. Family runs it. Great people. George special is just right for me. Their heuvos rancherous is the best.:)

The salsa and chips are all made in house and very tasty. Unfortunately, only the first serving is complementary then you have to pay for any additional. I ordered the chicken enchilladas which came in two and was about $8. They were delicious, I only wish they came with rice and/or beans because that did not fill me up. So... More

Food: Bland...underwhelming. Dishes lacked flavor. Price: Outrageous for the mediocre taste. $13 a plate but value was more like a $4 plate. I have had a lot better for $6-7 and this was just plain rip off for the poor quality. Location: Ghetto would be fine if food was worth it but it just was NOT. Service: Fine. Not outstanding... We were looking for a meal in San Bernardino which is not the most "friendly" town I have been to. Mitla Cafe was not the tidiest looking from the outside but a group of 8 of us had a meal there. I ordered Enchiladas, I was expecting this to be a typical spicy Mexican meal. I was very surprised as... More

The menudo has a terrible stench that leads to believe that the meat is not cleaned. The hard shell tacos were flavorless and lazy. You would think they would have better food being open that long.

Gustavo Arellano, in his book Taco USA, notes that Glen Bell, the founder of Taco Bell, had his first stand across the street from Mitla and he copied his tacos from Mitla. He called the corner of Sixth and Mount Vernon in San Bernardino the "Garden of Gethsemane of the taco industry." I think the reference should really be to... More
