I discovered this place many years ago. At the time it was in one small unit of a small strip mall shopping center. Now it has taken over the entire place. They're 10 times bigger than when they started, and for good reason! The food is great and it's not too expensive (not cheap either, but that's a good thing)

Best matzo ball soup in SD. Only place I've found that serves real latkes. Make sure you are hungry when you arrive. Take out is excellent.

This is the second time we have been to D.Z. Akins. The first time was over the top. Best food and service we have had at a restaurant like this. This time the service was still great but the food and prices have changed. My wife had a BLTA which was served cold. But we have always had the bacon... More

My brother & sister in law who live in San Diego took me & my wife there for dinner. Since we are both from the east coast we appreciate a good deli restaurant. Serving portions were very large. We both had the matzo ball soup which had also had noodles. The matzo ball was a little denser than I like... More

My son always wants to go to this restaurant when he comes into town, so since we were coming from the North County area to Balboa Park, we decided to go there for lunch. The food, service and variety of food at this deli restaurant is the best and well worth a 35 mile drive. Also their bakery is wonderful.... More

Over the many years coming to San Diego, we usually come here. The portions are huge. I believe the secret here is to get the fresh roasted chicken. The fresh corned beef. You can tell if it has been cooked a day or two before. It goes from a good meal to a great meal. Here I have had WOW... More

My wife and I lived in Rancho Bernardo from 2000 to 2006 and always enjoyed visiting DZ Akins for lunch or an early dinner. In 2006, we moved to Germany and lived there for over 8 years. Recently, we had an opportunity to move back to San Diego for a new job. One of the items on our to-do list... More

If you ate at this deli every day for one year you would still not be able to try everything they offer. Great deli sandwiches, soups, salads, breads, cabbage rolls, pastries, deserts, etc. Really good pickles in crocks on each table, Great service.

The hot pastrami on rye sandwich was average at best. It was warm, not hot; the pastrami was tough, dry and cut too thick (not shaved). Not the tender, juicy pastrami sandwich you would expect at a Jewish delicatessen.

Description
Established in 1980 D. Z. Akin's has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors back in 1980 and is still a family run business spanning 3 generations. From the Menu: "D.Z. stands for the two of us, Debi and Zvika Akin. Having lived in Los Angeles, we frequented many good delicatessens and knew that San Diego was in need of one. Considering how we both enjoyed cooking, and how even our first date revolved around a bowl of chopped liver, we decided to pack our bags, move to San Diego and take a stab at cooking for starved delicatessen lovers. With only a small budget, good old-fashioned recipes, the courage to experiment, hard work and long hours, 'D.Z. Akin's' came to be. We made a commitment to ourselves that we would never compromise on quality and we would fill our plates high with the finest delicatessen available... With the help of wonderful customers and perseverance, we became, beyond our greatest expectations, a thriving business."
