I found this place by chance in November 2017, have been going back ever since. Great food, pricey, but worth it. Staff are wonderful. Must if in the area. Recommend pastrami on onion roll. Bakery top notch!

Astoundingly full menu, but okay, I am confessing that the hot pickled tongue sandwich is my favorite. Ordering it might make your table partners blanch, but there it is. When it arrives, it just looks like a sandwich, a simply delicious sandwich. That said, there...More

Fantastic! We ordered their brisket sandwich. They are so big, we split the food. The potato salad & coleslaw are just two of the delicious choices on the side dish list.(and they are good) Their Barley w/mushroom soup is fabulous! Their prices are reasonable for...More

A go-to place for locals and to take out-of-town guests. The menu is extensive and the portions are huge. Homemade soups, fresh fixings for salads, and high-quality meats in the sandwiches are just the beginning. We've been customers for years and have never been disappointed...More

I sometimes will get soup to go for friends that are under the weather, nothing like some homemade chicken noodle to cure you. Or if I’m eating in I love a good old grilled ham and cheese sandwich, and DZ makes one of the best....More

Excellent food, super juicy pastrami on rye and great green salad. Also shared a piece of plain NY Style cheesecake, and it was great! Would come back here again and again to try the entire menu! Thanks DZ, I am thrilled when I eat here!

Sorry this took so long. Their portions are large. Dinner options might be a little more than $12-15. It will be worth it.

Description
Established in 1980 D. Z. Akin's has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors back in 1980 and is still a family run business spanning 3 generations. From the Menu: "D.Z. stands for the two of us, Debi and Zvika Akin. Having lived in Los Angeles, we frequented many good delicatessens and knew that San Diego was in need of one. Considering how we both enjoyed cooking, and how even our first date revolved around a bowl of chopped liver, we decided to pack our bags, move to San Diego and take a stab at cooking for starved delicatessen lovers. With only a small budget, good old-fashioned recipes, the courage to experiment, hard work and long hours, 'D.Z. Akin's' came to be. We made a commitment to ourselves that we would never compromise on quality and we would fill our plates high with the finest delicatessen available... With the help of wonderful customers and perseverance, we became, beyond our greatest expectations, a thriving business."
