Great steaks. The t-bone and the ribeye were both exceptional. The artichoke appetizer is a must-have too! Low key, country ambiance with a good vibe. Service was also attentive and generally good.

A short drive outside of Santa Maria, the effort is well worth it. Everyone traveling between L.A. and the Bay Area on 101 seems to know of this place. A 1960s Western dining feel. Old historical photos on the wall with full exposed grill in the middle of this small restaurant. Steak dinner includes salad, garlic bread, and a scoop... More
Three things: 1. Hard to find, especially in fog. 2. Not cheap - these folk know the value of their goods. Ribeye at $45 (but that's a full plate and dessert, too). 3. It's awesome. Table of three, busy Wednesday night - the decor is so small-town-hokey, the place borders on 'touristy.' But it's small—think 'Bistro' rather than Restaurant in... More
An amazing steak! I have eaten here many times, but it was especially good yesterday since I had not had solid food for two days (colonoscopy)! The Hitching Post is a walk in the past started by one of the ranching families that has been important in establishing the Santa Maria area. A western style restaurant with great service and... More
THIS is the place, y'all. You can't be a vegetarian and eat here....well, you could, but it would be difficult. This is the original Hitching' Post in a tiny, no cell service town, called Casmalia. (I heard my first owl when we came out of the restaurant.) With your order of anything Q'd, you get a shrimp cocktail, salad, oh,... More
Over several years, we have become predictable: Artichoke, goose & tonics, 10 oz. New York, 5 oz. Filet, a local red wine, etc., etc. Hitching Post I has always been predictable: Service is excellent, food and drink are excellent, atmosphere is local and friendly while being professional and the local wine selection is extensive. We avoid steaks every place except... More
We had 30 people and this place delivered. Not only good food, but fast and friendly service, which is not easy to do for groups this size. Steak was cooked just the way I asked, and our server was fully engaged and attentive. Worth the drive.
The Hitching Post is a wonderful place to dine. The place has character. The servers were helpful. The menu was very extensive and the steaks there are exceptionally wonderful ; cooked to perfection. The restaurant was able to handle our group of 30 with no problem! Highly recommend this restaurant. The movie Sideways was filmed there many years ago.
I was visiting Santa Maria for a one day visit and we wanted to go to a nearby steak house. The Hitching Post had the best ratings so we gave it a try. We split a rib eye steak. We choose the french fries over the BBQ vegetables. In addition, we had a fresh vegetable appetizer, shrimp cocktail, garlic bread... More
The red oak over which the meat is cooked adds a wonderful flavor to the steaks - the sides could really be revamped and improved, they're rather simple and lacking in quality compared to the steaks. Decor is very simple and rustic as this is a very old building in the middle of nowhere. Service is usually good. I would... More
