We ordered take out from this place and enjoyed our lasagne and minestrone. Authentic and reasonable priced. Large sized portions.

Being in Oakland the day before Valentine's 💝 we wanted to go somewhere special. The app helped us choose Riva Cucina in nearby Berkeley and we were delighted by the experience. The only unfortunate part was that Open Table didn't capture our reservation; so we...were seated at the bar. One good thing about bar seating is that you can see some of the meal preparations being done by the chefs. 🍴 😃 We started with Capesanta Gratinata (scallop) -- very happy that we ordered 2 because they were SO Delicious!!! Loved it! For entrees, we had RISOTTO AL PESCE and SOGLIOLA ALLA GRIGLIA (sole). Both were very good, although I thought they could have been prepared with a bit more flavor. My wife was satisfied; but I figured that a great Italian restaurant should use more spices. Service was great and overall it was a nice experience!More

I am probably going to repeat "to die for" several times as many of our dishes were just that. The scallop was tender and beautifully flavored, and even my three year old granddaughter loved it. We had the fritto misto which was light unlike many...places where it's greasy and oily. the golden and red beet salad was also delicious and then we had the raviolini stuffed with artichoke, delicate and flavor fun, and the risotto di mare, and the sole with polenta and to finish we had panna cotta (to die for) and the torta Nonna. We were stuffed and couldn't manage another bite, but it was all good and the wines were good too. Mine was a Pinot grigio.More

This is a very good place for dinner but today was my first time there for lunch. An excellent choice. A quiet neighborhood restaurant with delicious food and excellent service. I will be back.

We had wanted to go to Riva Cucina for a while and decided to go during Restaurant Week. The salad with beets, oranges, and greens was delicious. For mains, we had pasta with pork, spinach pasta with mushrooms and risotto del mar. All three were...good, portions were on the small side. For dessert we had panna cotta (very good) and bread pudding (okay). When we arrived at 5:30 pm, the noise level, of course, was good but half an hour later it was really noisy. Maybe if you request a table behind the curtained area you might have a quieter meal. The service was excellent, the ambience was good.More

We had a lovely meal. Wednesdays are no charge for corkage. We were with our winemaker friend who brought two bottles with him of excellent wine and we didn’t have to pay for it. They had a scallop appetizer and we share endive/pear salad. Both...were tasty but I would have liked more pears. We shared the quail and pasta dish - enormous amount of food. One friend had the sole and got two whole pieces. No one could eat dessert. We were in the room behind the main dining room and it was quiet and cozy.More

A friend took me here for birthday dinner. Why have I never eaten here before! The atmosphere is just lovely: cozy, warm, soft lights. The wait staff is so nice and efficient. The dinner: oh my! I adore risotto del mar, and theirs is superb....Truly. We also had a side of spinach and bread: both yummy. I plan to go back for sure!More

This restaurant is tucked away but has a lovely ambiance. It has an outside seating area too but it was too chilly the night we were there. The Italian menu is inspiring and the food is tasty. The wait staff was very friendly but not...great on follow through with requests we made.More

What a little gem in an off the beaten path of Berkeley. Everything was wonderful here, with the pasta as standout. The Bolognese was the real deal and delicious. We had the funghi pasta that was outstanding with delicate homemade pasta ribbons...the porchetta was superb,...with the crackling just the right thickness. I thought the pricing was very reasonable and a value. Portions were generous but not obnoxious. We had a group of 6 and we shared everything, and there wasn't a miss on any of the dishes! Well worth the trip for us from Marin!More

I recently visited Belotti for lunch with a friend, and Donato & Co for dinner with a group, and so it was high time to revisit Riva Cucina, another of my favorite local Italian restaurants. I went for a Friday lunch with a long-time friend....It was a very enjoyable experience in many regards. Although street parking can be difficult, there are dedicated parking spaces for the restaurant in an adjoining business park, and multiple spots were available. It was a bit cool to sit outside, so we instead headed for the inside. Tables are well separated, making it easy to have a conversation without shouting. The lunch menu is diverse, with a host of appetizers, pasta dishes, and also some main courses available. There were numerous temptations. We ended up with dayboat scallops for our appetizer. They are beautifully cooked (poached in olive oil), and remind me of a dinner I had in Jesolo Lido in Italy every time I order them. Pappardelle with a smoky pancetta cream sauce and broccoli bits served as our main course. I brought along a celebratory bottle of CMZ, a wonderful wine made by Matt Cline at Three Wine Company, and was happy to pay the $18 corkage. Unless things have changed, corkage is free on Wednesday, and so this is a particularly good evening to come if you have some wines in your cellar that need to be consumed. We finished with a glass of grappa. It was a lovely long lunch. Service was excellent, attentive but not intrusive, and quite charming. Overall, for what we had, it seemed a good value. I have had lunches at Belotti that cost 50% more and were not any more satisfying. Riva Cucina stays on my short list of favorite Italian restaurants in the Berkeley-Oakland area. Enoteca Molinari is next in my cycle for a revisit. I can actually recommend all four of them with great enthusiasm. As mentioned, Wednesday nights are a great night to visit if you plan to bring your own wine.More

We had not been to this restaurant in several years and were pleasantly surprised to find that it has gotten even better! We had two beet salads to share for the four of us. The portions were quite generous and the salad was excellent. Two...people had the pappardelle al fungi which was delicious. I had the passatelli alla salsicca which was “to die for” delicious. The risotto was my least favorite, but good. Just a little strong for my taste. We had the house blend red wine which was a nice complement to our food. Service was very good. We arrived early because we wanted to visit before it got too noisy ... and it was noisy by the time we left. Nevertheless this is a wonderful restaurant.More

Usually I am not happy to taste italian food outside my country, but this worth! Had, in a typical Italian "trattoria" ambience, pasta with home made special sauce a glass of original Italian red wine...delicious. Tasteful basic home made bread with flavored olive oil. And...a real espresso at the end. What else? Waiting to repeat!More

A late call on a weekend night got us an earlyish table just off the kitchen. The restaurant is down the hill from the Univeristy and more populated centers in the industrial section of Berkeley. But the leisurely drive, easy parking, inviting restaurant approach and...interior (with great natural and other lighting) gave the start to the evening a calmer feel than the cattle calls up near Telegraph and San Pablo. Yes, its Italian, but infused with the wonderful vegetables and great spice just out of the area gardens throughout the year. Preparations are colorful, pursing with flavor, and there are pastas, vegetarian, seafood, and carne dishes here to satisfy a wide range of palates. The wines by the glass and bottle draw heavily from Italian regions with a few Sonoma and Napas thrown in. While not an expansive wine list, its thoughtful selection and desire to match up glasses and bottles to the major menu items is clearly present. Wonderful local microbrews of ale, IPA, and even milder lagers and pilsners are ready to imbibe. Generous portions and great recommendations from waiters means that its unlikely you will get through four courses, but go ahead and try. Endive salad, parpadelle, but also the sole and pork belly were standouts for us. A wonderful place to plan a return visit--all the benefits of a classy place with none of the cloying waiters or self-absorbed pretension of half the restaurants up the road.More

You will come upon this restaurant completely by surprise. We had the spinach, ricotta and parmigiana filled ravioli sautéed with a tomato cream and sage aurora; and the pappardelle paisley pasta sautéed with mixed mushrooms, thyme, garlic-infused oil and a boschetto truffled cheese. For dessert,...we enjoyed the traditional Italian cake with lemon patisserie cream, pine nuts and almonds. This was all accompanied by a 2013 San Vincenti Chianti Classico. The service was great.More
