The wife and I use to come here all the time. This is all she wanted, for us to finally get away from the kids . So we had 7:30 reservations. We get checked in. Hostess says it will be 5 to 10 min wait.....We get drinks from the bar. 30 mins pass.We check in with the hostess once again she said it would be another 30-40 minute. There's nobody in the waiting room to be seated.By that point it way 8:30 every restaurant is closing down. We went to Hanna Japan just so we could eat something. The customer service was really great there. Thank you for the great evening!More

This was my absolute favorite meal, my entire visit to the Bay area ! The view was breath taking ! We watched the sun set and the sail boats float by. The service was impeccable! Our waitress was on point and the food was so...wonderful . From the presentation to all the mouth watering flavors, we were thoroughly satisfied. We had the best oysters here ! They melt in your mouth and the mussels in sauce...and the seared tuna !! It was all fabulous, as well as many cocktail options. This will be a must when I am in the area again. Thank you so much !More

This restaurant has huge open windows that look out directly at the Golden Gate Bridge plus lots of the Bay. You can sit in the window, or in one of the raised booths and have completely unobstructed views. Splendid. We wanted to enjoy our lunch...but found the food underwhelming, especially the undercooked French fries. Great menu with lots of tempting choices, but the execution was just ordinary.More

We had a great late lunch at Skates before move-in day at Berkeley. This was our first time here (coming from the east coast) and had read great reviews of this classic restaurant. We were not disappointed! We used OpenTable and had no time getting...a time slot for two at short notice. Service was great. Our server was very pleasant, professional, and responsive. Our orders came out promptly and were prepared as we requested. The lunch menu had great variety and something for everyone. My vegetarian/pescatarian daughter had no problem finding something for her and greatly enjoyed her salmon BLTA. I had a great open-faced crab sandwich. They have a decent beer list, although a few of their more local brews were not available at the time. The cocktail list looked very tempting. The place appears to have a great amount of seating for various sized parties. Smaller two-tops are available along the windows with a fantastic view of the bay. We could clearly see the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance. I’d say it’s a pretty upscale venue, with pretty well-dressed customers. However, we didn’t have any problems being a little more casual before dorm move-in day and it being lunch. But I’d personally say business casual or more dressy clothes would fit in. Despite it being an old-school traditional restaurant, it is appointed in a very modern style and has a creative menu with traditional options. When we come back to Berkeley, we will visit Skates again!More

Went here for dinner last night for my cousin’s birthday and the whole experience was disappointing. We were a party of 14 and from the very beginning when we got to our table we could tell that our server vibe was off. I said we...should get a new one but we gave him a chance. He said his name was Roge but our ticket said Nathan. And being a server myself I could immediately tell and I had a bad feeling and I know the assumptions and stereotypes that our made in the restaurant field about a table with majority back people. They automatically assume we will be problems and not tip but because me and my family are well aware of hospitality industry we actually are the total opposite of that. But we never even got a chance to show that even tho we shouldn’t have to and from the beginning we should be treated with exceptional customer service no matter what! First off our server seemed very annoyed by us from the beginning. He never smiled and everything we asked for or needed he had a very irritating facial expression as if he was just having a bad day.I could also tell a few other tables had problems with him. He never checked on us and asked how the food was which is a part of the steps of service. He only came back a few times to pressure us to buy more drinks. Then our apps took forever to come out at least an hour and then our food it self took longer than that and it came out little by little til the point that others had food and some didn’t and some food never came out and we had to ask about it. Our reservation was for 815 but we didn’t get any of our food til closer to 945. My cousin was missing her burger and my other cousin ordered prime rib but got shrimp and grits instead. In addition, a friend of the family asked for no Caviar on her pasta and it came back with no shrimp or crab or anything just sauce and noodles. By the time they tried to fix this and bring the food back everyone was done eating and the ones missing their food don’t want it but we still took it togo to not be problematic. I asked to speak to a supervisor and he tried to give us the missing meals for free which was nice but we didn’t care because it wasn’t about getting nothing free it was about having a overall nice experience at this beautiful restaurant. We have visited here before without a large group and the server experience was great which it why we thought it would be a great place for a birthday celebration. Which I told them it was my cousins birthday so they could do something nice and I saw them singing happy birthday to another table. But they never came over to sing happy birthday and we never even got a chance to get desserts because after all the problems with our food and the vibe the serving was giving us we was ready to go asap. I hate that this was our experience and expected so much better and especially from an establishment like this. So my cousins birthday dinner was ruined and we will never come back to visit again or recommend this place because no one should ever be treated this way!More

It was delightful to return to this restaurant, where I used to eat when I lived here 35 years ago. The building itself is just as spectacular as ever, extending right into the bay with soaring ceilings and expansive windows overlooking the water and San...Francisco in the distance. We had very attentive service during our meal and the vibe was upscale but friendly. We ordered sushi and it was quite amazing ... fresh and delicious with a really nice seaweed salad. I also had a Bibb salad that was super fresh with a blue cheese dressing that was somehow light and refreshing but flavorful at the same time. My son had a shrimp pasta dish that he enjoyed thoroughly, and my daughter had the salmon poke. All outstanding. For dessert, we had the key lime pie which was a stand-out, but also had the creme brûlée which is really among the best I've had and not to be missed. Overall, we had an excellent meal and would definitely return again while in the area.More

We came on Sunday afternoon with reservations and had no success getting a table - very busy with tables all pretty much taken. Then made reservations for Monday afternoon requesting a window table and we got it, and almost all patrons were seated at a...window table. Receptionist and server worn no masks although some other staff did. Salmon poke bowl and grilled salmon were good although the salmon in the bowl were simply a few cold small pieces covered in some type of marinate. Lots of rice and less greens in the bowl too. Local draft beer was quite good, but the grasshopper cocktail was very weak and served without a small straw in a glass that needed one. The view of the bay is still spectacular although the interior furnishings are notable worn.More

My husband and I took my parents here for dinner last night. Our server was Leo. Service was attentive and the food was very good. Portions were large, too. It was dark so we didn't have a view but I can see that being a...large part of the draw to this restaurant. We were all pleasantly surprised by our experience and will definitely return.More

Great view, food, and attentive staff. My husband had the muscles and thought they were one of the best he’s had. I had the shrimp and lobster bisque. Everything was delicious and the bisque had big chunks of lobster. My granddaughter had the pork belly...and thought it was great. My husband was given a delicious mousse cake for his birthday. I would highly recommend.More

Skates has been serving the people of the East Bay and its visitors for decades. I spent a year doing a Masters in Berkeley in the 90s and much enjoyed my meals here, and returning with my family was meant to be the highlight of...a few days vacation in the area. Sadly, the evening was a bit of a disappointment. I noted that the restaurant had clearly very recently joined the Landry's loyalty scheme, and I don't know if that points to a change in ownership, but the service was inconsistent and not very good. More disappointingly, the food was just not that wonderful. Three of us had halibut, and the fish was just a tad over-cooked and dry. Not enough to send back (all the more so as I was also entertaining guests), but enough for us all to feel disappointed. I fear the place is coasting on its wonderful views, and perhaps still suffering from pandemic-related issues, but this was not the evening it should have been - especially for the price.More

Been 20+ years since I last ate here. Still has an incredible view, if the fog layer has not been sucked in through the Golden Gate. Food is overpriced but quite good.

If a restaurant allows you to bring in your own bottle of wine, most of them charge a fee to pull the cork out of the bottle.
