My husband and I took my parents here for dinner last night. Our server was Leo. Service was attentive and the food was very good. Portions were large, too. It was dark so we didn't have a view but I can see that being a...large part of the draw to this restaurant. We were all pleasantly surprised by our experience and will definitely return.More

Great view, food, and attentive staff. My husband had the muscles and thought they were one of the best he’s had. I had the shrimp and lobster bisque. Everything was delicious and the bisque had big chunks of lobster. My granddaughter had the pork belly...and thought it was great. My husband was given a delicious mousse cake for his birthday. I would highly recommend.More

Skates has been serving the people of the East Bay and its visitors for decades. I spent a year doing a Masters in Berkeley in the 90s and much enjoyed my meals here, and returning with my family was meant to be the highlight of...a few days vacation in the area. Sadly, the evening was a bit of a disappointment. I noted that the restaurant had clearly very recently joined the Landry's loyalty scheme, and I don't know if that points to a change in ownership, but the service was inconsistent and not very good. More disappointingly, the food was just not that wonderful. Three of us had halibut, and the fish was just a tad over-cooked and dry. Not enough to send back (all the more so as I was also entertaining guests), but enough for us all to feel disappointed. I fear the place is coasting on its wonderful views, and perhaps still suffering from pandemic-related issues, but this was not the evening it should have been - especially for the price.More

Been 20+ years since I last ate here. Still has an incredible view, if the fog layer has not been sucked in through the Golden Gate. Food is overpriced but quite good.

It is so unfortunate that Skates on the Bay would not do anything to protect their patrons that eat at their restaurant in Berkeley. We stopped here for lunch on Friday, June 4, 2021 as we traveled through town. We came out to our car...and our window had been smashed in. There was another person’s car that had his window broken too. We feel we were targeted because we both had out of state plates. If this is such a high crime area why wouldn’t the restaurant provide security for their parking lot. If we had known how bad it really was, we would not have stopped here. This restaurant is in an isolated area with people just hanging out in their cars waiting for restaurant guests to go inside the restaurant( and yes, we saw them sitting there after we came out). If there had been security in the parking lot, this would take care of the problem. The police were called and they didn’t even come out because it happens so frequently. Do not stop here to eat because you will most likely be targeted as well..More

I am going to dispense with reviewing the building or decor/furnishings. We had previously enjoyed a Restaurant Week lunch so the timing was right for us to do it again in January 2020. Some of the offerings were different but still very good. We had...appetizers of fried calamari and a salmon poke. The lunch entrees were the grilled Alaskan salmon sandwich on a brioche bun with the other entree their pork belly. The serving size is generous and each app and entree were delicious. We finished off with dessert, each getting a Key Lime pie. Service was excellent but then again it wasn't busy when we were there. I have to say compared to other Restaurant Week offerings, Skates on the Bay definitely has a better and higher level of food offerings at the same or similar price point .More

Ok food. Overpriced. Great bay views. $150 (including tip) is just too much for a mediocre dinner for two. 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 drinks, no dessert. Good calamari $19. Hardly any seafood in the seafood bucatini pasta, $33, only 3 large shrimp, and a...tiny bit of crab, way overpriced for having hardly any seafood in it. The seafood Cioppino $39, was pretty good, but again overpriced, the sauce wasn’t that great, more like spaghetti sauce. Overall 2.5 stars, Not impressed, I’ve had better.More

I was on a business trip in Concord and wanted a close place to experience the water and sunset. This was such a wonderful find!! Quick drive but felt like I was on the beach. Amazing views, great food, wine and service. It was so...peaceful sitting over the water with the warm cozy ambiance of the restaurant. I wish I lived closer to experience it all the time.More

We were a party of 7 with reservations at noon. Five of us had arrived at 11:45 am and the hostess said she would seat us as soon as the remaining two arrived which they did about 5 minutes later.... to which the hostess said...she wouldn't seat us until the stated reservation at noon -- in spite of the fact that it was a weekday, the restaurant was not at all crowded, and 6 other people had already been seated. We probably would have been seated earlier if we did not have reservations! We all thought this was odd. Food was decent enough - 4 out of 5 stars -- nothing really stellar. We ordered two crab dip appetizers; steak sandwich; 2 seafood louie salad; 2 mahi mahi stuffed with crab; 1 steelhead salmon; 1 cod and chips; iced tea; lemonade; Sprite; and 1 burnt cream. Total bill for the 7 of us was $282 including tax.More

If a restaurant allows you to bring in your own bottle of wine, most of them charge a fee to pull the cork out of the bottle.
