The Schoolhouse is a big space to make cosy and despite obvious effort with the decor, it just doesn't quite make it. We went in for tea and scones on a cold weekday afternoon. The first thing that hits you (and I have been there several times, it's always the same)- is a strong smell of cooking oil, as if... More

Fairly quiet for a Saturday though we had booked in case. Whole party chose the 2 courses for £10 and we all had the beef casserole followed by the apple crumble and custard. This was great heart- warming food on a cold day. The beef was very tender and came with plenty of veg. The crumble was excellent All homemade.... More

If you're just travelling east or west on the A75 this is an easy stop for good food a little west of castle douglas. They've a good sized car park (we usually pull a trailer). A lot of their food is home made or made locally for them such as sweets, my wife's eyes always pop out at sweets and... More

Went to The Schoolhouse after a recommendation. If I'd read some of the previous reviews, I might not have bothered. Well, I'm glad I did. For the avoidance of doubt, there was NO smell of chip fat hanging in the air and it was pleasantly WARM inside. The food was excellent as was the service. Good bit of banter with... More

On booking a table for 5 I made the mistake of asking for high tea instead of afternoon tea however when I told the staff of my mistake they couldn't have been kinder and pulled out all the stops to accommodate the change in menu required. I couldn't speak too highly of the service and quality of the food provided.... More

Stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon and wished I'd continued on.... food was poor, lady serving was rude, barking at kids and our clothes stunk for the rest of the day of fried smells.

I stopped at The school house on the way to cairnryan today and what a disappointment it was. the smell of chip pan fat when we walked through the door was disgusting....not to mentioned it was freezing inside and had to sit with my coat on the whole time. I ordered a roast beef dinner which came with (6) peas... More

We visited The Schoolhouse twice during our week long holiday at Gatehouse of Fleet, both times for scones and coffee. The scones were delicious and staff very helpful. It is obviously very popular, and the menu and array of home bakes explained why! Only complaint was that it was a bit cool, and the musak detracted from the experience. Would... More
