Four of us paid £200 for the meal which was nothing special. Maybe it was the dishes we chose but two of us were disappointed and the other two liked their meal but did not think it was anything but average. My daughter and I...had a mezze to start which was lacking everything a mezze should have and a really scant amount of food or choice - very disappointing for the price. If there was any meat then I don't remember it. The staff were effecient but not very friendly - I NEVER SEEN ONE OF THEM SMILE and the welcome you get at a restaurant is half the battle before you even eat. I doubt I will rush back there or be able to recommend it. The food on the plate is serrved nothing like on the pictures. As for the ice cream dessert it was all of two mouthfulls. The bar was well stocked but the drinks were expensive. I had house red but it was very uninteresting wine.More

Such a lovely restaurant, with beautiful decor. The staff are great without being overly attentive. They balanced attention with privacy & the odd bit of chat when we had asked questions. We enjoyed a Mediterranean meze board to share which was lovely & a good...amount of food for two people, without you feeling too full prior to mains. My mum had chicken breast in a wine sauce which she said was cooked to perfection. I had the venison saddle & it was delicious. So well cooked, melted in the mouth, better than steak! We loved the selection of vegetables, not just boiled broccoli as is common at a lot of restaurants (I love broccoli but show some imagination!) but baby sweetcorn, sautéed green beans & carrots which tasted like they had been boiled in a lovely stock. These were presented in a filo pastry basket which added nice texture. Both of our sauces were so so yummy & it wasn't a problem for my Mum to have extra sauce. The bar selection was very good here & the staff talked us through some gins. We went with a couple of whitley neil flavoured ones each which went down a treat. All of this came to just under £70 so for the quality of food & experience we thought such good value :) We also thought it was a lovely touch that the owner or manager said hello to every table & asked how everything was. He didn't go into massive chats, again respecting privacy & letting us just get on with it like his staff but it made us feel appreciated as customers. It was a fantastic evening & we will be back with our partners! We'll recommend to anyone looking to dine in Kelso. Thanks to the whole team & hope you enjoy your tips! :)More

What a pleasant surprise. Well appointed with very pleasant atmosphere. Very interesting menu & we both had rib-eye steak which was perfectly cooked & beautifully presented. Friendly & attentive young staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience & would love to come back.

This was one of the best meals we enjoyed in Scotland. The service was great. The food and wine spectacular. If we're ever back in Kelso, we're heading straight there.

On a weekend break to Kelso and booked this restaurant for dinner on the Saturday evening. We had some lovely wine and the food was absolutely delicious. We were a bit disappointed that when we asked for coffee at the end of our meal we...were told, they only did Americano, which is not to our taste. The staff were welcoming and the service was good. Good value for money.More

This restaurant exceeded our expectations, We were given a warm welcome on arrival, the staff were friendly and efficient. The menu was very comprehensive, we were a party of four and we all had different dishes. Everything was delicious. Starters were fresh crab, smoked salmon...and haggis /black pudding, all were beautiful. The mains, steaks were cooked to perfection, the the duck tender, and the pasta dish very tasty and well seasoned. We finished with the trio of lovely desserts. We all had a most enjoyable evening and will happily drive from Carlisle to dine here again.More

We were on holiday in Scotland and booked this restaurant for a celebratory dinner - celebrating three graduations. I spoke to the manager beforehand and asked for some sharing platters for starters. They were magnificent - the most amazing sea food (scallops, langustines and mussels)...delicious bruschettas and some mezzo. The rest of the menu did not disappoint either. Service was good - charming and attentive and we had a wonderful family evening. Thanks so much.More

Food was superb. Scallops cooked perfectly. Sauces excellent, and service very good. Very busy but service and food still great. This restaraunt is consistently good and is a credit to the scottish borders.

Made a last minute booking after being let down by another restaurant in Kelso. We were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed an excellent meal of classic Italian dishes. Service was very good throughout.

Tried numerous places in Kelso on a Tuesday evening and almost have up hope before trying The Contented Vine. They were very helpful and willing to accommodate our pasta preferences without fuss. The meal when it arrived was really very good (with our own pasta...ideosynchracies) . Really well done - except would like the garlic bread introduced to some garlic. Happily we had a very good meal rather than the fasting the other restaurants seem to be offerring.More

My wife & I went on a Sunday evening so it was quite quiet. The front of house staff are young but competent & friendly. Tables are well spaced and comfortable enough. The menu isn’t huge but seeing other tables dishes being served it all...looks good. My wife had a seafood spaghetti which was excellent. The smoked salmon shone through. I had been told to order the “famous” carbonara. I thought the description of “famous” was a bit arrogant. I was very wrong. It was simply the best carbonara I have ever had, & I include numerous eaten in Italy. If you go ignore the English items & go full Italian. I have no hesitation in recommending. If you drive there it has a very small car park but there is ample on street parking.More

We went on a Saturday night and it was full, so the great and the good of Kelso clearly like it. The restaurant is a large dimly lit room, quite noisy when we were in. The food was ok, but not special. In places the...tables are close together, I had my chair kicked by the same member of serving staff three times trying to squeeze past. Our wine selection was substituted without telling us, when pointed out they blamed their wine merchant. It was said to be equivalent and the same price, we were charged more until questioned.More

Visited The Contented Vine on Sunday evening with friends while visiting Kelso for the weekend. The Smoked Salmon and Mango salad starter was lovely and I followed this with the Chicken Breast wrapped in Parma Ham. My friends were equally happy with their choices of...the Duo of Fish and Black Pudding and Haggis. All in all a excellent evening in a excellent restaurant and will be making a return visit some time soon.More
