My daughter and I had a delicious lunch today accompanied by our 2 dogs and a 9 week baby who did not cry!. An imaginative menu and good wine list. How sensible to serve a variety of wines in a carafe in addition to a bottle or a glass. Delicious venison liver and excellent dhal were the highlights. Friendly service,... More

Splendid pub. Called ahead to say we would be late for our booking and that was fine superb atmosphere inside - full of character. The pigeon starter was scrumptious and the lamb was well cooked and a very decent portion. And when we were struggling to get a cab back to our hotel they kindly arranged transport. A lovely place... The food is well prepared and served. Recently modernised but retaining some of its former character.

We came here twice last year for dinner and rated the place very highly. We came again last week for dinner (a saturday night) but found things quite different. I understand there may have been a change of management? In any case; the menu was very limited as compared to our last visits. We also found the menu much pricier... More

Arrived just before 2pm and ordered three different roasts. All excellent with a range of veg to suit even the fussy 12 year old. Great service in lovely booth so it felt cosy yet social.

I'm sorry but I don't get why this pub gets such good press. It was recently voted in the Top Ten Pubs in the UK or something and a celeb chef reckons it to be his favourite pub in the whole world ever. Yes it's an attractive building (although it desperately needs re-thatching), yes it's in a pretty little village... More

Great ancient pub but very small inside. Had an excellent Sunday lunch on a cold day, having walked there with the dog. Fortunately the dog waited until we were finished to levitate the table 6" stretching the lead in an attempt to say hello to a passing canine...but even this incident seemed to add to the atmosphere of the place.... Visited the Compasses Inn with friends for lunch on a cold December day. The staff friendly and helpful and a nice choice of warming food at a table by the open fire to keep December chills away. Situated in the Wiltshire countryside with plenty of walks round about, an ideal location. Obviously a popular inn and busy during our lunchtime... More

Visited on a December evening. Quirky old place, with an open fire. Excellent food and service. Friendly staff. Surprised it was so busy , being out of the way.
