Service was slow. Food was average, serving size good. Won't go back. Chips were warm. Salsa was flavorful. Guacamole had no flavor.

The idea of this restaurant is awesome. New Mexicans truly have their own cooking style and flavors. The menu was diverse, but a lot of the items had one or two quirks to them, that separated them from authentic NM cuisine. The appetizer was very good, but once we ran out of water in our glasses, more was never provided.... More

First of all, don't get the margaritas. Tall glass with ice and mix. Maybe you could bring your own tequila. I can't believe anyone who knows anything about lobster (well, this is a landlocked town) would smother it in cheese and enchilada sauce. So why bother? The guac was good, chips very fresh and tasty. The chile relleno was stuffed... More

The outside has waterfalls. The inside looks like you are in a bat cave. We had the basket of sopapillas which were good but overdone. My husband tried the Enchantment Platter which had a variety of the dishes. Very spicy. The salsa spicy and most of the dishes. You can order certain items like the Fish and Chips without the... Having lived in New Mexico long ago we miss green chilies, chili relleno, sopapillas, etc. Thank god we found Carlsbad Tavern! They do New Mexico food properly so don't expect to eat bland food here. Bring an appetite...the wife and I typically share the enchantment platter which is plenty for two. Good margaritas as well!

I encourage you to go to this fine restaurant and bar. The seating is both outside and A/C inside. We liked the rugged decor inside. I had The Las Cruces Platter...at $22.50 a bit expensive for lunch , but with a crab stuffed poblano and a crab and a shrimp enchilada I had a great lunch! They serve "New Mexico... More

The staff is superior and give great suggestions. Food is fabulous - always have great time. They also have great wine list. We have been going here since 2015 - try to go at least once a week as we so enjoy the people and food.

We had a great meal with great service; this was exactly what we were looking for. I definitely recommend the carne adovada - it was terrific! Fun decor & good beer selection topped it off.

A sports bar and restrurant inside and a comfortable outside with trees and water rushing past. Service is great and a menu to satisfy any taste. Some unique combinations.

Let's face it, there are no chilies but Hatch or New Mexico chilies! I'm totally biased I know but I still think that's a very true statement. Carlsbad Tavern has some truly wonderful New Mexico dishes... the carne adobada is amazing... the green chilie burrito is fantastic... you simply can't miss if you order either of those! Be prepared for... More

Founded with the mission of bringing unique New Mexican cuisine to Scottsdale diners, Carlsbad Tavern & Restaurant has been serving up authentic, spicy and flavorful food for nearly two decades.

Created by Michael P. Capriola and named in homage to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southern New Mexico, the restaurant opened in 1995 at Scottsdale Road and Earll Drive. The original location was developed with an eclectic New Mexican theme, including bats, Mexican movie posters, Roswell memorabilia and a newspaper menu called The Daily Guano. In 1998, the restaurant moved to Hayden Road, just south of Osborn where the bat cave theme was further developed, making the most of the water feature, The Guano Canal, on the patio and providing a cave-like interior in the dining room and bar.

Carlsbad Tavern’s philosophy centers on providing guests with an entertaining environment, excellence in the kitchen and friendly, efficient service. While the sign touts New Mexican “grub,” the quality of food and attention to detail in preparation has always been of utmost importance. Many of the original and core dishes are still being served today. Favorites (carne adovada, osso bucco, crab-stuffed poblanos) requested by regulars – aka “bat fans” – are daily specials.

Over the years, Carlsbad Tavern’s menu has consistently won accolades on the local and national level, including:
• 20 Places for Hispanic Dishes: Enchantment Platter, Arizona Republic, September 2011
• 10 Favorite Spicy Dishes: Habanero Cheeseburger, Phoenix New Times, September 2011
• Top 100 Dishes in the Valley: New Mexican Potstickers, Phoenix New Times, August 2011
• One of 51 Ways to Beat the Heat, Phoenix Magazine, July 2011
• Best Burger in Phoenix/Scottsdale in Travel and Leisure Magazine, May 2011
• One of the Top 85 restaurants in Phoenix Magazine, January 2011
• Habanero Cheeseburger, Best Burger in Arizona, Food Network Magazine, 2009
• Best Restaurant, Food Lover’s Guide to the Valley; Phoenix Magazine, 2007
• Best Pork Dish for Carne Adovada, 50 Best Dishes in the Valley; Phoenix New Times, Jan. 2009
• Best Patio Dining, Best of Phoenix; Phoenix New Times, 2001

In addition, Carlsbad Tavern prides itself on providing locally-brewed and micro-brewed beers on draft, as well as a comprehensive wine list with wine pairings suggested on all entrees. Happy hours offer a discounted menu, and a reverse happy hour and menu in the evenings draws out industry workers from throughout the Valley, who appreciate the atmosphere, the quality of food and the company.

Carlsbad Tavern continues today under the ownership of Andrew Capriola and Judith Merritt. As a family-run restaurant, Carlsbad Tavern welcomes all ages and offers excellent food and service in a relaxed and welcoming environment for casual dining, special occasions, group events and parties and just hanging around the bat cave with a draft beer.
