We were recommended to a bunch of places that were closed on New Year’s Day and we ran across this place walking down the Main Street . My two sons were starving and we ordered the XL king crab for 2 see photo of the actual crab which was pulled out of the aquarium. It was excellent good attention from staff . Would highly recommend !

Had heard about Patagonian king crab and our hotel concierge suggested Cantina Freddy just down the Main Street. A little touristy with the big live crab tank in the window, but atmosphere was pleasant. I had a medium size crab which was certainly more expensive than any other meals we had eaten in Argentina but as a special treat it was delightful and worth all the work with the scissors provided. My spouse had sea bream (she won’t do the work for the crab). She found the bream a little fattier than we are used to, but she enjoyed it. Certainly the very reasonably priced Malbec made the whole meal decent value. An enjoyable night out in Ushuaia eating the signature dish.

Wish I'd taken a table when I arrived at noon (opening) rather than coming back at 1pm to find a line out the door. They don't take names, just first come, first seated. But, our group was happy to enjoy the sun on sidewalk while we waited 30 min for a table. The crab was fresh and tasty. Non-crab eaters enjoyed the fried squid and pasta dishes. Definitely be assertive and don't let people line jump. Also, the "natural crab" is fresh crab taken out of the shell for you. Save yourself the effort (and price) of disassembling the whole creature. Just as tasty.

Went to this restaurant tonight on the recc of some friends who had been there just a couple of days ago. My wife and I were really excited to try it.
For context, there are a few things I should mention. First, my wife and I are both fluent Spanish speakers from Latino families. Next, I DO NOT write online reviews. This is my first. Third, I am black and not immediately identifiable as any particular nationality of we do not speak. My wife and I are well-travelled and like to adapt as much as possible to where ever we happen to be. We have travelled in Argentina before.
Lastly, I don't define myself merely by race, and I move through the world not defining anyone else by theirs.
When we walked in, the place was packed (good sign). We were eventually seated by a very nice woman. As we sat waiting for our order to be taken, I noticed that the one waiter on the floor was busy, so we waited patiently for him to come over. He never did. The lady who seated us, who wasn't waiting on tables took our order eventually. Not particularly unusual until we notice that both the waiter and the owner we quite attentive to the other patrons in the place. Conversing, smiling, joking with everyone BUT us.
Whenever a table needed a check, the owner would go over personally to deliver it and accept payment, except with us. The nice lady brought us out check, and it wasn't until I insisted by gesturing to the owner that we needed to pay with a card that he came to the table, with an attitude.
When he ran the card and I thanked him, he responded in Portuguese as though he had assumed we were Brazilian. I speak several languages, Portuguese is not one of them.
Sufficed to say, this exchange with Freddy ruined my experience in his place. Not sure who if anyone will read this, but I strongly suggest you try any number of other seafood places in Ushuaia before this one.

You can't go to Ushuaia without eating this special dish, the big crab which actually would 'granceola' in Italian language. A typical restaurant, kind service, fast and delicious. The entire Crab is a bit expensive but there are many other dishes you can taste with crab less expensive and equally good. Enjoy you rest in Ushuaia.

We went here for dinner and ordered the king crab for two. What an impressive crab Wirth French fries and rice with green beans. Our waiter gave us kitchen shears and showed us how to cut the crab open to eat
Delicious!
We also had some ice cream with Calafate berries and chocolate
Yummy!

Ushuaia is the site for king crabs and this restaurant offers different opportunities: we had crab soup and a kind of crab cake: both were outstanding.
Personnel kind and helpful.
The Argentinians claim it is rather expensive, for our European standard it was cheap: a full meal with a glass of good Mendoza wine does not exceed 30 Euros

Had a great lunch here as it was one of the places recommended by the local tour guide. It's a popular bustling place, with nice checked tablecloths, Reminded me of one of the those small restaurants in Italy or Spain.
We had the king crab au naturale, seafood platter and pasta. The king crab and seafood were fabulous. The pasta was pasta, so probably better to stick to the seafood which is a speciality. Was all washed down with a good bottle of Torrontes. Excellent combination. Prices are reasonable by British standards.
Obviously it is a bit touristy because of the cruise ships but it has a nice atmosphere. I have noted the comments about the waiters not speaking much English. That is correct. They don't. Maybe this is because Ushuaia is in Argentina, and not in the U.K. or North America. Why not take the trouble to learn a few words of Spanish? It would be appreciated I'm sure.

Wanted to have King Crab while in Ushuaia. Found La Cantina de Freddy in Trip Advisor and how could you go wrong with a restaurant with a huge crab adorning the restaurant sign on the outside. It looked a little empty but that quickly changed. The maitre'd from our cruise ship was already there eating and soon locals, tour groups and others were lining up to get a seat. We ordered a white wine. I had the King Crab natural which they took out of the shell for me before serving. My husband had the Seafood risotto. Such good flavor. It was served with a special spread and fresh bread, a meal in itself. I finished off with a double espresso. Our bill was $32!
Neighboring tables had whole crabs, appetizer samplers, all looked delicious.

We walked in and reluctantly took the last two seats right next to the door. Patrons kept walking in with cold gusts of air and having long conversations with the waiter about wait time next to our table. When a table opened up further in the restaurant we asked our waiter if we could move and he agreed and started to help us - then the manager stopped him and said no. Something about reservations which was BS. Typical tourist trap so use caution if going.

The restaurant is consistently crowded and the staff do an excellent job at attending to everyone. The king crab draws oooooh's and aaaaah's on their way from tank to chef, but other options on the menu were good as well. The side dishes were not in proportion to the sizes of the crabs, however, so if a table was splitting an order not everyone got enough to eat of the side salads etc.

A group of us chose this restaurant for dinner on a Sunday evening. We arrived at 7:30pm and about half the tables were filled. In less than 30 minutes, the place was completely full and newly arriving diners were being sent next door to El Faro. Our waitress didn’t speak much English so she had another waitress answer our questions. I really wanted to order the crab natural which was supposed to be easier to eat than a whole crab, but our waiter said only the whole crab was available which was more food than I needed. I chose the seafood soup which was good, but not really what I had hoped to order. My wife ordered the Black Hake and she loved it. It had an excellent char on the bottom and the fish was very moist and tender/flaky. We asked to split our bill separately (as we were with a larger group) which they did do, but it took some time.

The food was lousy, the parmesan crab and the rice with crab had no taste. The price is too high for the poor quality.
They sat us on the first floor where there was no waitris ans to call them we had to make hand signals to a camera so that they could see us from the ground floor,
After paying we went back to the hotel to have dinner.

La Cantina Fueguina de Freddy is a small, cozy place with a somewhat hectic atmosphere – totally as a small, family-run restaurant in Italy.
We managed to a get a table without reservation – the last one. The place was very busy and our waiter s bit confused/stressed, so he a couple of times forgot some orders, and the wine arrived somewhat late for the food.
Never mind, it was very nice being here, and the king crab was spectacular og good. Side dish a bit simple, but the main thing was the crab. The sitting was very packed, the Covid 19-taking into account.
But good experience. Recommended.

They were out of my first 5 choices. The "King Crab" legs were tiny and Paella for 2 cost $50 with a beer and a Coke.
Whatever they used in place of saffron gave no flavor to the Paella and the service was terrible. When the bill came, we had to send it back because they had charged us for what I had originally ordered. When it came back they doubled the price of the Paella so the bill only changed a little. We asked about that and they told us that that was the price for two. Pretty hard to argue when the table menu has no prices. Another customer ordered the fresh crab and they served it without taking one out of the tank. He said it tased like frozen but the waiter assured him it was fresh. He's probably better off considering the look of the tank. You'd think they would keep a "Show Tank" clean.
Ignore the older reviews and eat somewhere else.
