Quaint little cafe right on the Plaza and it is everything you'd want in a simple cafe. The food is not stunning, but it's adequate. You can tell it has been around forever and while there are some tourists here and there, most of the patrons are locals, which I like. Great, fast, and friendly service. Not much English spoken... Bar Plaza Dorrego is across the Plaza from the Anselmo Curio Hotel. Definitely some history here. Amazed places like this still exist. Small, busy, old but quaint place with tight seating. If you don't speak Spanish you may have to wait for them to acknowledge you. They serve you peanuts to snack on while they prepare your order. We sat... More

San Telmo is one of those places you must visit....specially if your are a tourist. In one of the most popular corners of the neighborhood, just in front of Plaza Dorrego, you´ll find Bar Dorrego: a magical place ... full of history that serves one of the best espressos of the city. At any time you can have a drink... More

We stumbled into this place as we were at the fair and needed a break. The interior is really appealing with lots of antique items. It has an old world feel to it. Service was friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable. Get a seat against the window and watch the craziness pass by.

We went there regularly for breakfast, trying to feel the Argentinian way.. ;-) The waiter is very authentic, stylish and friendly. The owner as well. The choice of Food is quite impressive. But you have to visit the place for ist stylish, old fashioned interior with tons of Flair. Sure, the location is also very good, directly in the heart... More

We stopped here at the start of our visit to San Telmo on a really hot day. Desperate for a cool place and refreshment we chose this fabulous bar/cafe steeped in history. Originally a grocery store many of the old cupboards and fittings are still in place. It has been a bar for many of the 130 years of the... More

A disservice to such a great and historic location. Place is dirty, not maintained and the old man behind the cashier needs a shower. On the opposite corner, Starbucks getting all the clientele. I hope someone takes over such a good place. Not recommended.

Walked from the Obelisco to San Telmo and looked for somewhere to eat tgat was historic near/on Plaza Dorrego. This 'ticked' the box. Great old bar, which had me thinking of the people and events that had taken place there over the decades. Had a Lomito Completo (thin sirloin steak with lettuce, tomato, ham, cheese and a sliced boil egg... More

This is one of the city-granted "notable bars" in San Telmo district, and definitely the atmosphere takes you back to the past century (19th. century I mean), but the drinks and meals on offer are not a great choice, and the staff seem to be there just waiting for tourists to pop in as they will surely do considering the... Staying in San Telmo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
