We went with 3 friends - two locals for dinner. Now it is in a historical theatre with lots of marble in the foyer. Great location and brilliant atmosphere. Wide menu and all special - obviously a very capable chef behind the scenes. Food brilliant Wine awesome Wait staff above reproach Ambience warm inviting and lovable See photos attached. In... More

If you like Spanish food, then this is one stop you cannot miss. Buenos Aires has lots of old spanish clubs with restaurants. El Casal is not the exception and it has great food in a great enviroment (superior to most of the ones like it). Good place to go with your couple and enjoy Cochinillo or Paella, don't forget... This is the restaurant type you would not enter looking from the outside, the only thing indocating that there is a restaurant inside is a small sign on a blackboard on the street. Well once you find the restaurant it is not fancy in the looks but the food is very good, specially if you like fish.

Well preserved catalan spirit in a charming atmosphere. Even if it had all been fake it would still worth visiting.

The food was good. Abundant portions with a real Catalonian flavour. The Restaurant is located inside the Margarita Xirgu Theater in the old colonial district of San Telmo. The building dates back to 1886 and was (and is) the Catalonian Community Building. The service was superb, they even had gluten free bread. The tapas we tried were excellent (mushrooms and... More

We came to this restaurant because it got great reviews. When we arrived at approximately 9pm (normal dinnertime here) there was only one other party seated in the restaurant. The wine was very, very good, as was the bread and tapenade. We only ordered two tapas and the Valencia paella (paella with chicken, pork, rabbit and snails). I tried the... More

Great variety of Fish and Seafood with a broad and well priced wine list. Renown for its suckling pig, you don't go wrong with other delightful preparations of well known Spanish fare. Service is exceptional and what you would expect from an historic venue. Come to enjoy the architecture as well. In the Spanish style, when you order langostinos they... More

Well, I should start with my expectations - having seen a friend's photos of a whole suckling pig and an overly positive review in Pick Up the Fork, a famous Buenos Aires food blog, I had to investigate for myself when my favorite Spanish-expat friend was in town for the week. I left confused... and hungry. I'll go chronologically -... More

The suckling pig as well as the fish of the day were outstanding. Huge portions and cooked very simple, like the Argentinians like it. We've been there twice in our week in BA and enjoyed the waiters as much as the location, esp. the tiles on the wall. The place fills up after 10pm, like most places in South America.... More

Staying in San Telmo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
