Visited Aitutaki in November for the second time in the last four years. Each time we enjoyed visiting Tauono's Garden Cafe. Tried delicious Sonja's kuru (bread tree) lasagna. You might find that the place has a very basic facilities, but this is fully compensated with Sonja's hospitality and superb meals she is preparing for visitors. We also bought and enjoyed... More

I love lasagne, but I have a wheat and dairy intolerance. Whilst staying on Aitutaki, I visited Tauono's garden cafe and had one of the best meals I have ever tasted. Sonja, who grows her own organic fruit and vegetables, makes a variety of delightful, incredibly healthy and absolutely delicious meals for lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The deserts... This place has had a long ride based on that Lonely Planet listing. The prices have crept ever upwards, I don't care how 'remote' Aitutaki is, the owner of this place knows exactly what he is up to. The food is totally average, and heavily marketed on the fact some of the produce is grown locally on site. The service...... More

We were inspired to visit Tauono's after reading her inspirational book dedicated to her late husband.Dedicated to self sufficiency and recipes from local produce from their own extensive gardens we felt very priviledged to be welcomed into Tauono's Garden Restaurant an open-aired retreat in the front garden of her home. After reading her book we had great expectations of the food... Although what we had was ok, I have to agree with Skin197,. I found the old palm fronds on the ground needed changing, with the prices they were charging they could have afforded to smarten up the eating place, removing the blue plastic ceiling and levelling the ground a bit for safety would be good. We had the coconut cake... More

This was our second trip to Aitutaki and we made sure we ate here again. The dining is outdoors under shelters with a great atmosphere. The food is fresh and enhanced by the fresh produce and herbs from their garden. It was a wonderful lunch washed down by homemade lemonade. There is also a fruit stand so we stocked up... More

This "cafe" is located in the front yard of a person's house, under a large tree; the structure is "hut-like" with a make shift blue plastic sheet as the roof. The sides are open and the floor consists of old coconut leaves spread over sand. To call this place "casual dinning" is an under statement. Maybe an ecclectic experience would... More

Stopped in here for a light lunch and was greeted by a lovely Austrian couple who immediately made me feel welcome. She suggested the coconut cake with a fresh fruit platter and it was delicious! The fruit platter had at least ten fruits on it all tasty and fresh the coconut cake complimented the fruit beautifully. It was one of... More

This really needs to be said as tourists shouldn't be subjected to such treatment. It was truly the worst eating experience we had in our 15 day holiday in the cook islands. The seating area is carport size under a blue sheet of plastic. The wooden tables and benches have years of ingrained dirt and mould. The floor is unsafe... More

Delicious home-made lunches created from organic produce grown on their own orchard. We also bought some produce to take away, as well as delicious bread fresh from the oven and coconut cake. We loved the fresh produce grown in the Cook Islands - starfruit, bananas, passionfruit were in season when we were there. Sonja's book is also a really interesting... More
